Absolute Truth

Romans 1:19-22    because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,

My heart hurts for the nation I live in. We are consistently turning our backs on God. We are headed down the road of moral decline wrapped up in the ideals of we know what is best for ourselves and others. We are legalizing everything that appeals to one, under the guise that it will offend another. We are living in a day of rapidly descending morals & integrity at an alarming rate. All has been lost in what our nation was founded on; “One nation under God”. The moral decay has infected our rulers, our leaders, our schools, our churches, and therefore has infected our families with incredible divorce rates and damaged our children at early ages. My nation is headed down the road to total destruction as a result of turning our backs on God and the absolute moral truths we have been given.

I researched Absolute Truth. We see the evidences of God all around us in creation every day. Satan has planted the idea of evolution into society, trying to weaken the proof of God before us. Inside us as the pinnacle of Gods creation lies a conscious; an inner proof of Him that we must willingly decide to rebel against these evidences. Romans 2:14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them. Do you realize that tug of sin that you deny you feel so you can experience the pleasure of that sin is denying God? I lived my life in that denial for most of my life; I know you have to feel it.

Our leaders are being forced by deny Christ by these self appointed unions. Being told they may pray to a God, but not to their God Jesus Christ. They are being told that it offends, therefore if it does it must stopped. There is no such thing as truth that they must answer for and to. I pray these leaders stand their ground for Christ, that they do not deny Christ, that they sacrifice for Christ. Would you? Would you stand your ground at all cost if you were to claim Jesus’ name, or to deny Him and get a free pass? That day is happening in the world right now in religious persecution that involves imprisonment and even death. When some come to know Jesus they are ostracized from their family and live their lives in fear. Would you? You are only here for a short time; the immeasurable time is spent where the evidence of your lives were spent here; hell, or paradise. Would you take a stand for Jesus?

NOTW – Not of this World

1 John 1:1-4    That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life– 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us– 3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

As I read the epistle of 1 John this morning, you can’t help but feel the spine of his writing in love as you do in the gospel of John also. In the gospel of John he speaks much of Christ’s deity; of how Christ is God. Here in this epistle he is re-intreating that fact to refute all of the false teachings that had arisen. John is one whom spent three and a half years of his life with Christ; he is an eyewitness to all of these accounts. He can attest to all the miracles, death, resurrection and ascension of Him. He was simply putting his foot down and saying “No, that is not true. I was there!” There were many “isms” that had began to divide the church; many false teachings that divided God, and even divided Christ; Gnosticism was a leading heresy.

This epistle points to the love that must abide in us as a believer. This love that covers a multitude of our own sins, must also overlook the sins of others against us. It speaks of how we cannot hold something against one another and truly worship our King. 1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. This world preaches self; Christ preaches sacrifice. We cannot have a heart for God and have hate in our heart. This world will give us many opportunities to hold grudges or hatred for those who have wronged us. We either fall into Satan’s trap in them, or we rise above them in showing compassion and the forgiveness as we have been forgiven. John points out the sacrifice of Christ, and with it the level of love that God has shown us. 1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

John points out that as Christians we will be different; we will be hated by those that love the world. 1 John 3:13 Do not marvel, my brethren if the world hates you. Those that love the world, and live their lives in pursuit of the rewards of it, will not understand what you possess eternally that goes against their selfish pursuits. The evidences are all around us today of a world captured int the damnation of selfishness; of no absolute truth, and the moral decline as a result of that belief. If you present yourself as one who loves all as Christ loved us first, and hold to the moral standards and truths He has given us, you will be hated by the world that lives by the adaptable truths that fit their self seeking motives. 1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Accepts and assists

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

The last 36 hours are a blur. I had some sort of illness that resulted in a fever, and almost no sleep the night before. On top of all that my mind was racing with thoughts of my testimony coming up this weekend; I knew this time was different, and I know God is laying the word disciple on my heart. Webster’s dictionary defines a disciple as: one who accepts and assists in the spreading of the doctrines of another. Do you? Are you? Is being a Christian different from being a disciple? It should not be for Christ last commands called us to go forth and spread the Good News that He brought to a dying world (Matthew 28:19-20). Christianity does not mean that you claim the security of Salvation and live a life unchanged after it. There should be such a change in your heart and life that the evidences of His Spirit living inside of you are there for all to see.

Take a real look at yourself; list your top five priorities in life. The true order of the things that matter to you the most. If you are placing your career, success, family, health, security, even your own life at number one, you are not a disciple of Christ. The realization of your eternal damnation as a sinner, and that God himself came to earth for your redemption, should humble your heart to a point of living a life dedicated to Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The only way to justify sin before a Holy and righteous God is a holy and righteous sacrifice. There was only one that could do that; Jesus Christ came as fully God and fully man. He lived a life that we were originally designed to live, perfect and sinless. He died upon that cross and bore the weight of all sin upon Himself that God might see you righteous through His Son. He paved the way in a free gift of grace, and He will present the invitation to join him to humble, repentant hearts.

There must be a point in your life you realize that scale of your life condemned in sin. With this comes the realization of the need of a Savior; and the means of this which Christ provided for you. GOD sacrificed His Son for you! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. You have no means by which you are ever to earn it, but you are called to work it out in the acts of being a disciple. You are called to “accept and assist” the ministry of spreading the Gospel. James 2:17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. You are to live a life in daily pursuit of God and the things of God. You are to live a life with an eternal focus; a life that sees the struggles in it as temporary, as means to draw you closer to God. You are to place Christ above everything and everyone; He humbled himself to the point of death for you; can’t you die to Him?

Oh no! They are up again!

Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”

Paul was on his third missionary journey and he was in the town of Ephesus. Ephesus was a town full of supposed magic; even in the name of God they were trying to exercise their power over evil forces; this brought them supposed prestige. Even the seven sons of a priest had fallen into this dark world and were practicing this magic. God began to do strange miracles through Paul in this region to reach these people. His sweat rags, handkerchiefs and aprons were healing the sick and casting out demons just by those affected touching them. This was proving this that Paul’s preaching was truly from God.

These seven sons of Sceva had called upon Christ’s name to cast out an evil spirit. The evil spirit replied to them “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”. The evil spirit did the unthinkable in that he casts out the exorcists. 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. The evil spirit had called their bluff; he had laughed in their haughtiness and showed them they were nothing but false; no power in Christ but false prophets. He had left one body and leapt into seven, humiliating them as they fled naked. This became greatly known throughout the region and the name of Christ was glorified.  17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

Does Satan know you? Does Satan fear you for the power that resides in you as a disciple of Christ? Or is he satisfied at the religion that you rest on with your weekly worship and false security that will have no effect on his kingdom? Does he know that you truly are so busy that you have no time for Christ and the work He has laid before you? Do you feel so good about yourself that you present no threat to the kingdom of darkness? You will pay eternally for that pride. You should desire to have your picture on a Most Wanted poster at the gates of Hell. Your life should be focused every day on the Kingdom Work; a disciple such as Paul that spreads the Good News to a dark and dying world of false religions and securities. This world needs those disciples such as Paul to live their lives focused on eternity. The time is now, the time is every day that you awake and spend time with God. Every morning when you awake, pray, and open the Word is a day Satan knows who you are in Christ. That day may be difficult because Satan desires to take your eyes of Christ. Dig in for it is a war that is worth fighting when you are a disciple of Christ that is known to the enemy.

Broken branches

2 Timothy 1:2-5    To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

What is your heritage? What do you know of the generations from which you descended? Our lines may be a mystery,  they may be shrouded in pain, they may be something we wish to hide from, for God delivered us from painful situations. Our stories may all differ, but we all have a story. We all were raised in one of two situations; either in a God fearing home, or one that did not recognize Him. There is no middle ground here; you either raised a Christian or you were not. God may have delivered you as the beginning of your ancestral line into His kingdom for your generations that follow you. God may have placed you in a line of His elect, and you were the one who rebelled against Him; that was my story. I was the prodigal son who came from a line of Christians, even a pastor, but yet desired to rebel against God for much of my life. The power of praying parents and Godly influences softened my heart, and I responded to His invitation.

Paul was encouraging his “adopted” son, his protege, the one whom he loved dearly in his most likely last words to him in second Timothy. Paul was in prison and knew his execution was imminent, he desired to see Timothy again, and to encourage him to keep the faith in all the adversity that he would surely face. He pointed Timothy to his upbringing, his heritage, the strong faith that been instilled in him as a child. His heritage was that of loving family that desired and encouraged him in the same faith. 5 genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. In this depth of faith is where Timothy would find strength and his spiritual gifts. Timothy’s gift is not named, but Paul encouraged him to seek the pursuit of the use of it to God’s glory. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

Paul is using all this to point out to Timothy where he has come from, where his heritage lies. This should have encouraged Timothy and strengthened his faith in the understanding of where God has placed him for service. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Paul did not want Timothy to fear the persecutions that lie ahead as a minister of the faith; he spends much time in Timothy assuring him that persecution will come. We may be living in the days of the descriptions of 2nd Timothy; of false prophets and growing persecutions of Christians; of a time when we must suffer for Christ. Are you running from where He has placed you when you look at your family tree? Are you the rebel without a cause? Could that cause become to glorify Christ in your remaining life?

It is clear now

1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Yesterday I returned to my old dirt bike racing days; just for a time, to let both my boys try their first race. It was a great family day together, and they had a great time. I decided to saddle up too, and try to at least finish the race. Racing is hard to describe to those don’t get it, but it is something that is always in your blood. For me it went as far as turning into an idol, and became a huge turning point in my testimony of giving my life to Christ. It wasn’t five miles into the race  and I had those same feelings again; it was time to give it up, this was not for me any longer; physically, mentally, and even spiritually, I knew I was done. It was most likely my last race. God has even taken away my shoulder muscle to try and make it much more clear for me to understand; but in my mind that pride still tries to overcome obstacles He lays before me.

Paul was steep in religion; he was a highly educated man; he had a personal encounter with the risen Christ; at some point he visited heaven; but God had allowed Satan to give him a thorn in the flesh. 2 Corinthians 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Paul most likely could have preached a sermon so elevated many would have come to repentance from the power of his teachings. He could have elevated himself through his wisdom to a level like none other once he came to truly know Christ that he formerly persecuted. He had every thing that every preacher wanted in education and experience. This was the stuff that great pastors are made of, until pride creeps in and destroys their ministry. I do believe God knew that, and allowed Satan to torment Paul, which kept Paul humble. God used Satan against himself in the ministry He laid on Paul’s heart. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

I am far from an educated man. I graduated High School because the teachers told me if I would at least show up, they would pass me, and I did, barely. I have never been a reader, or a book learner; I always learned by example, and trial and error. I have found myself at this stage in my life back in school, in seminary no doubt, enrolled in a two year program at Liberty. I am a living example of what God can do in anyone’s life who has a heart for Him. 1 Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. I am nothing but an ol’ country boy with a heart for Christ. I love spending daily time with Christ and writing what he lays on my heart. You can have all that He has planned for your life too once you follow the lifestyle principle found in Matthew 6:33. That is a great place for you to start today in transforming your life to as a disciple of Christ; today, for you are not guaranteed tomorrow.

Dare to be different (Jesus Freak #2)

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

All through history you find those that deny the power of God, even denying that there is a God. There is theology wrapped up in those that believe, and those that deny. Those who believe are considered the “elect”, and those that deny are not. Therein lies a basis for deep doctrinal argument on the biggest topic of Predestination. That is not a topic for a morning devotional. Paul was writing to a church troubled and divided. The church was claiming to be followers of different leaders, and taking their eyes off Christ. They were placing their trust in the wisdom of men, and not the power of God. This today even happens when we place more hope in the man delivering the message, and not the message itself. The message of the cross is the Gospel itself.

Those who deny the power of God are simply placing more faith in themselves than they are the Creator of the universe. They believe their own wisdom is so great, they have figured it all out. They believe that only the ignorant believe in God; how dumb we must be for placing our faith in an unknown God. Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. The proof of God is all around us in creation; the evolution ideal takes more faith to believe in that the ideal of a supreme being. The pride in ones wisdom, is the road paved to eternal damnation. That pride will lead you down a path of destruction without the humbling of your heart, and the realization that you don’t have it all figured out.

Do you smile at the opportunities to share your faith, or do you withdraw for the fear of ridicule? That is a small victory for Satan every time you withdraw. You should never be ashamed of sharing your faith, most likely that urge you feel is because the Holy Spirit is wanting to use you to encourage that person who stands before you. Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.You don’t want to miss that opportunity; it is a step closer to God for you, and most likely them too. You will experience God in your life, and see the fruit of His work through your life. If your message comes with ridicule for your faith, smile and shake the dust off your feet. God has prepared your heart, but maybe not theirs yet. John 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Dare to be different from all those out there who say they believe, yet there is no evidence in their lives. Share your faith whenever possible, and let God perform the increase.

My hope is better than your BMW

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11    I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. 11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.(NIV)

Ecclesiastes would be probably the least likely popular book in the Bible in the area I live in. Northern Mecklenburg county is an area of excess; lake living, big money homes, cars, and toys. People are so focused on themselves and the rewards they feel entitled to, I doubt their hearts would care for the words of wisdom found in this book. I too fell into that trap; I lived with the motto of who dies with the most toys wins. I sought it all, borrowed to pay for it all, and am still trying to pay for my mistakes. I thought happiness was found in material possessions like many of you. There are sadly men in God’s pulpits these days preaching that God wants you to have them. Joy is not found in anything made by mans hands or gains.

Ecclesiastes is the book by the wisest man who ever lived, Solomon. It is the book at the point in his life that he “gets it”. He was given his wisdom and his wealth by God. He took those gifts and ran from God grabbing all that he could to make him happy. He built a great temple, great homes, fortified cities, male and female servants, endless treasures……all kinds of stuff made by mans hands and gains. Through his wisdom in this book he came to realize all his hard work would be left to somebody who had done nothing to earn it; he could take nothing with him into eternity. 21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. He had worked so hard to obtain; yet it is all gone in a breath of life; Vanity here is described as that fleeting moment.

There is only one way that you can find happiness, one secure investment that will reap guaranteed rewards. Place your hope in eternal treasures, and invest your life in the rewards of investing your hope in Jesus Christ in others. You will leave behind a legacy of eternal rewards for endless generations to come. You will gain a joy that no monetary possession can provide. You will gain a peace that the world cannot reclaim. You will gain a freedom in your soul that carries no price, but pays in endless eternal riches. You will come to see the simple things in life as gifts from God. Solomon grasps the idea of the gains found in the simple pleasures, the simple gifts from God. 26 For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. The closer you draw to God, the more you realize what matters on a worldly scale, does not matter on the eternal one. The seemingly lowly here, are in truth great gifts from God.

2 Corinthians 11:3 -4   But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted–you may well put up with it!

The apostle Paul was getting slammed by false teachers in Corinth. He had visited there, spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, and the early church was started. He had written an earlier letter to encourage them, strengthen them, and help with necessary disciplinary actions within the church. He had promised to return to Corinth. In his absence, there were those in the church who began to slam Paul and his ministry. The lied about many things, all to discredit Paul’s ministry and hurt the cause of Christ. Satan had infiltrated the church. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

We all must come to realize there are most likely more false teachers today; Satan’s captains disguised as angels of light. They flood our airways in all the media outlets, they are with us every Sunday at our churches. They preach soft gospels of prosperity and earthly riches that God wants you to have; to name it and claim it. Christ told the rich young ruler to sell all he had and give it to the poor. Luke 18:22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” When Christ was gathering his disciples, his call was not that of a two week notice; it was one of leaving all you have to follow Him, and reap the eternal reward. Matthew 16:24 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Nowhere in the Bible does he tell us to grab all we can for our short time here. We are told to live for the hope of eternal paradise. In that hope is the eternal peace that is a treasure the world cannot possess or steal from us.

Paul could have lived a life of exceeding any of today’s rich pastors. He could have used his testimony of Christ visiting him on the Damascus road, to his visit to Christ in heaven, (2 Corinthians 12:1-6), all to draw the attention and glory to himself. His understanding and love for Christ kept him humble and persecuted. This gave him a ministry that only glorified Christ and showed the power of Christ that was so evident in his life. When you hear a pastor speak something that either stirs your heart, or stirs a question in your soul, pray and go to God’s Word to find the answer. 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. Don’t just blindly take their word for it; let God show you the truth himself in His Word.

Tunnel vision

2 Timothy 2:14-15   Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The apostle Paul was encouraging Timothy of how to keep focused; of how to not waste his energies on some of the false profits in that day. Some things are just considered babble, and not even worthy of Timothy taking the time to respond. Paul is pressing Timothy to focus on the Gospel, and the defense of it, but to not spend his time addressing the matters that truly do not matter at all. Focus on his ministry and make sure that it always has substance that benefits the hearers. Do not waste his time and energy on things that truly did not make a difference.

“Rightly divided” is only found here in the New Testament. It means to “cut straight”, like a straight path, or keeping a straight course. Paul is charging Timothy to not let the distractions take his eyes off his ministry. Satan loves to provide the distractions. When you begin to pursue God in his Word and prayer, it is no coincidence that phones ring, something seemingly important arises, you remember a “to do” that hasn’t gotten done, anything and everything to take your eyes off spending time with God. Satan knows the power that comes in a heart truly seeking God; a heart focused on serving God and becoming a disciple for Him. Satan wants to give you every reason, even seemingly good reasons to not come to abide.

A heart for Him is a heart that feels his power in the Word that is given to us. The more time you spend in the Bible, the more the Holy Spirit reveals it too you. 1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. With this time cultured in the Bible comes an understanding that brings about a light in your heart that others begin to see. This light is the light of Christ that lives in you, and He begins to use you to teach what He has shown you in his Word. The more time you spend there, the more you live a life focused there, the more you become like Him. Stay rooted in God’s Word and begin to strive to be the best disciple you can be for Him. You will begin to see the distractions for what they are, and your heart will be less bent to respond to them.
