About my magnet

About my magnet

1 Corinthians 2:1-5    And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

I had a talk yesterday with one of my best friends, and the Godliest man I know. He always encourages me, and I always know God is using him to do so. His discernment is incredible; we were talking about God’s calling on our lives and the different calls, but all called to preach. This morning in a favorite devotional, it spoke of being apprehended by God. “We are not here to work for God because we have chose to do so, but because God has apprehended us….What you preach is determined by God, not by your own natural inclinations.” (Oswald Chambers). When God gets that grip on your heart like never before, you come to realize He has you at this moment right were He wants you. As a child of His, Free Will may allow you to wonder from that center line of your life for Him, but the magnetism of His Sovereignty draws you right back to center.

I live in the present tense; my memory and lack of it trouble me deeply. It comes as a result of genetics, abuses, and stresses in my life. It has gotten much worse in recent years. My mornings out here are many times seeking the things I should remember. I felt that pain in our conversation yesterday in speaking of Old Testament stories. I struggle much more than I can ever reveal, but in it I have also seen God renew that desire for the new each day. I cannot rely on any supposed wisdom, for I cannot remember it. That hearts desire for the new word from Him keeps me seeking Him every day. I only want you to see Christ in me, just as Paul says above. I am a “unedjumicated” man; I am enrolled in seminary, but I am far from scholarly. I only seek to know more of God, and the things of God found in deeper study of Him.

There is nothing special about me; all have have, and all I lack, is all God’s Will for my life. My life is found in the pursuit of Him now. My hearts desire is to encourage you to do the same. My life changed when I simply began to read my Bible every day. That act will change you too, for you cannot be unchanged by the Word of God. All that you desire in life is found in that book. All that you desire in life will change in that book. You do not have to go to seminary to become a disciple; you do not have to be educated to preach the Word of God. You only must live your life as found in Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. That hearts desire is the opposite polar magnet that will align you with the magnetism of His Will for your life.

Mirror First

Mirror First

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

I have so much on my mind. I sometimes wonder if all that is on my mind is the distractions of the world, or ways that God draws me closer to Him. In all of it do I stress out with the worry of it, or in it, am I drawn to God through it? Does He allow all of this to keep me seeking Him continually; not to feel as though I can do life on my own? Could I become so comfortable that I don’t see the need for God? This morning in prayer I asked God to help me see my life as He does. To be on the outside looking in at all of my struggles and things that I stress about. I thought of the Brandon Heath song, “Give Me Your Eyes”. It speaks so clearly of the compassion the Lord has for the lost and broken; what we seem to miss so many times stuck in our own worlds of selfish focus on our struggles.

I spent time in Proverbs and came to the passage above. The study of it led to Proverbs 3:7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. 8 It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. Reverent fear of the Lord will produce a life that leads to righteousness. That life with it’s pursuit of righteousness will lead to a deeper understanding of how He sees the world. It will strengthen you from the inside out; feeding and nourishing your soul for what the body needs. It will not feed it with worldly “stuff” that blurs our vision from the things as God sees them. The junk that this world seeks to penetrate our minds numbs us to the things of Christ. You know of what I speak; you surely have your own battles just as I. The level of reverent fear of the Lord is directly related to your struggle with those evils.

In the continued study of that passage it led to a parable that Christ spoke of in Luke 18:10-14. It was about a self-righteous man and a tax collector who went to the temple and prayed. The self-righteous man elevated himself, but the tax collector humbled himself and asked God for forgiveness of his sin. Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” When we want to see things as God sees them, we have to be brave enough for the mirror. A reverent fear of the Lord is knowing how He sees ourselves; knowing that in our hearts are we pursuing righteousness or living for the world? If we are in humble pursuit of righteousness, that we are getting glimpses of His eyes. Those glimpses typically start in the mirror.

Indifference found in religion

Indifference found in religion

Revelation 3:17-18   For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. (ESV)

I live in the land of excess; the country I live in, right down to the community I live in. The banking industry and wealth surround me. People that are consumed with all the worldly possessions they can attain; excess to a high degree, working to impress all those they do no know. I lived that life in the pursuit of happiness through “stuff” for most of my life. I grabbed for all I could attain; the temporal pleasure wore off, I moved to the next conquest. The cycle is endless, for just as the Laodecians are described here, I was spiritually blind to my lostness. That desire I was trying to fill, was a hole in my soul that could not be filled by anything found here. “The riches of the body will not enrich the soul; the sight of the body will not enlighten the soul; the most convenient house for the body will not afford rest nor safety to the soul. The soul is a different thing from the body, and must have accommodation suitable to its nature, or else in the midst of bodily prosperity it will be wretched and miserable.” (Matthew Henry)

The Laodecian’s thought they were at the peak of their lives in so many ways. They felt rich, and blessed by God in so many ways to a point that pride had creeped into their religion. Their chests were puffed out to the point their hearts were hardened and indifferent to God. They thought they had all they needed; they felt as though they had attained, forgetting about the power of God through provision and grace. They just became indifferent and seemingly numb to all that came to a true heart for God. Pride and humbleness are polar opposites; pride can creep into your religion and close the door to God. Christ saw their hearts and knew how far they were from him. He sees your heart and knows the level of your true religion; is it religion or is it relationship with Him? Religion kills the soul for it produces the acts that lead to works that save. Those works that save are built on pride in accomplishment; that pride grows indifference, a false security found in religion. The false security of religion found in weekly pew attendance, will become a south bound bus seat for your soul.

Have your eyes been opened? Do you desire to know that He has what you need for your soul? Do you understand that a true heart for him leads to paradise, and is only found with a humble repentant heart? “Doubtless there are many in hell that once thought themselves to be in the way to heaven. Let us daily beg of God that we may not be left to flatter and deceive ourselves in the concerns of our souls.” (Matthew Henry). Is Christ tugging at your heart? He provides the key in the next passage: 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. He can take your indifferent heart and save your soul eternally. He can provide you what you will never find in the pursuit of stuff, or the indifference found in religion. He can give you what truly satisfies your soul, and use you to draw others to Himself,  with your testimony of a changed life found in Him.

It should make you squirm

It should make you squirm

Revelation 3:14-16    Write to Laodicea, to the Angel of the church. God’s Yes, the Faithful and Accurate Witness, the First of God’s creation, says: 15 “I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot – far better to be either cold or hot! 16 You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. (The Message)

Those in the church of Laodicea are the worst of all; they are indifferent to all that is religion; they are content and stale in themselves and have no passion about them. The analogy of lukewarm water here; lukewarm serves no purpose of any kind. Cold water soothes from the heat, and warm water soothes from the cold; lukewarm does neither, it has no effect. Matthew Henry states, “Lukewarmness or indifference in religion is the worst temper in the world. If religion is a real thing, it is the most excellent thing, and therefore we should be in good earnest in it; if it is not a real thing, it is the vilest imposture, and we should be earnest against it. If religion is worth any thing, it is worth every thing; an indifference here is inexcusable: Why halt you between two opinions? If God be God, follow him; if Baal (be God), follow him. Here is no room for neutrality. An open enemy shall have a fairer quarter than a perfidious neuter; and there is more hope of a heathen than of such. Christ expects that men should declare themselves in earnest either for him or against him.” He is quoting from 1 Kings 18:21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word. Elijah had challenged the followers of the satanic god Baal to an act of his supposed power; understandably their god failed; Elijah called down fire from heaven before everyone and consumed all the sacrifice in the power of the only true God.

A ho-hum attitude to all that is religion disgust God. The indifference to the One who created, sustained, and sacrificed all, is to spit in the face of Him. This is an elevation of pride that comes in the next passages; the feeling that oneself has attained all that they have. These hearts have not been humbled by the Lord. Are they so indecisive that they simply cannot make a decision? Are they so weak they are not able to make a stand for Baal or the Lord God? Do you have that attitude of indifference towards religion? Do you feel nothing either way; do you say “What does it matter anyhow?” This sicken’s the Lord; even those that take a stand against him have a better chance of being changed by the grace found through Him than a person who simply drifts.

There is much more to unpack in the half-hearted Christian found in this church. This is where many of us find ourselves today; I found myself living for the world but thinking I was just good enough to get into heaven. I felt my good deeds outweighed my bad; I felt that my upbringing and my sporadic church attendance would pay my way. The scariest passage in the Bible grabbed me; Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!‘ A glimpse of that understanding awoke me; a glimpse of reverent fear found there put a passion in me. These two passages should spark that same fear and produce a changed life that is far from indifferent to all that is religion; they should produce the life of a disciple; a life dedicated to the One who gives it eternally. Do they stir your soul too?

Get on the plane(of discipleship)

Get on the plane(of discipleship)

Matthew 28:18-20    And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

My wife leaves this morning on her first mission trip to Romania for almost two weeks. She knew very early she was called to go on this trip; she felt that call on her heart and responded to that tug in obedience. She heard and felt that tug because she had been seeking God with all her heart after the life changing experience of loosing her job. She felt as though she had hit bottom, but God had ordained it to pick her up. Her life has incredibly changed, and I have seen incredible spiritual growth since her world was rocked. She is now about to experience God as never before, way out of her comfort zone, where He lives. A mission trip is a life changing experience, for you see God do what you cannot; you see God orchestrate situations that only He can; your eyes are opened through your heart with the removal of the distractions of this world, and a life dedicated to God during that trip. Many times it breeds a life changed to that focus for much more than just the trip.

There are those going on this flight halfway around the world that are terrified of flying! Do you love your God enough to face your fears? Do you trust your God enough to place your life in His hands; to do what you are terrified of doing? That is where He lives, in accomplishing what you cannot. Look at the promise found in verse 18, that proceeds the Great Commission to go and become disciples in verses 19 & 20. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. The power and the promise that God is in control of all circumstances should bring peace. The enemy is the author of fear and doubt. The enemy does not want you to rest on the promise of verse 18. When God tells you to GO, he is with you for the journey. He may allow tribulation before and during that journey, but it is all under his control, and it is all designed to draw you near, and to draw glory to Him.

How do you exemplify a disciple, one who follows the Great Commission? One who spreads the Good News that Jesus Christ has come to save a dying world. That there is an eternal hope for a heart placed in Him that the world cannot steal away. That all the troubles that you face in this life are but temporary, and paradise promised with Him is eternal. You cannot become a disciple until you truly possess that hope; you must have such a heart for Christ that you seek him every day. Psalm 63:1 A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. The heart of a disciple is an image created by God. The heart of disciple is one that seeks, finds, and simply cannot contain their joy of finding Him. Once you begin to experience God in prayer, his Word, and your life daily, keeping him to yourself is simply not a possibility any longer. You will talk to your friends, neighbors, co-workers, strangers, or maybe, just maybe, face your fears and get on a plane to go halfway around the world.

All I need

All I need

1 John 2:15-17     Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

I wish I could insert the entire commentary from Matthew Henry here of 1 John 2:12-17. He so elegantly explains of how at all levels of our Christian lives we are to focus on God alone. Of how we are to abide in God’s Word, so deeply planted in our hearts, that we move to a life focused only on God and the things of God. Of how we as Christians should be so bent in that pursuit, of Him that to the sinful desires and pursuits of this world, that we are “crucified to the world, (to) be mortified to the things, to the affairs, and enticements of it.” Philippians 3:8a Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. Satan and his enticements of the worldly pleasures of sin are a battle that is fought all our lives, and only won through the strength found in abiding in God’s Word.

I fell, no I jumped, into the pursuits of these sins of this world for much of my life. Those pursuits and confessions of those sins could fill a book. I lived for the moment, and the moment was about me and what I could obtain. Pride is at the root of my testimony, and God has been hammering away at that foundation of sin upon which my life sat. He has revealed it, and continues to do so almost daily. There is a part of me in this Sanctification process that has become “mortified” to the extent of materialism that surrounds me daily. The evidences of it, and the pursuit of it,  are everywhere I find myself daily. All these point to how far the world is from God now. 16 For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world.

You must ask yourself the question of verse 15; do you love the stuff in this world more than the Creator of this world? Do you spend your life in the pursuits of all that you can obtain in any and all areas? Are you so focused on your next conquest that you don’t have time for God? There is nothing you will ever obtain, never able to “name and claim”, that will make a cent of difference in eternity. That cent of difference can make the difference where you spend eternity. 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. The scriptures of verse 16 outline the three topical sinful pleasures that can take our eyes and hearts off God: Sinful sexual desires, covetousness or materialism, and pride. 16 For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world . Where is your struggle? I have all three……..

Open the trunk

Open the trunk

Psalm 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name’s sake, Lead me and guide me.

I saw a post this morning on FB, “Is God your steering wheel or your spare tire?” That is a great analogy, on what is He to us? Do you spend enough time with Him to say that he steers your life, or do you just go to him in times of trouble for help? Is God so small in your life that he is reduced to the likeness of a mini-spare? Just a temporary fix to get where you are going, and then thrown back in the trunk until another emergency comes up again? Spare tires are for emergencies only, they utilized only to get you out of a bad situation and on to a point in your journey that they are set aside for the next bad situation. We can all let God spend too much time in the trunks of our lives.

Psalm 31 is written by David, and it is a Psalm of thanksgiving for being a child of God. He is pouring our his heart to God in a lament over the trouble in his life. He is weary from all the people in pursuit of him after his life. But buried in this Psalm of the weariness of David is the beauty of one who trusts God. Buried in there is a heart that knows all of his life is under God’s control,  Psalm 31:15a My times are in Your hand. David trust and longs for God; he puts his entire life in God’s hands. He was known as having a heart for God, even in all his failures he exemplified a repentant heart that continually sought God. Psalm 84:2 My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. David’s life story, one of blessings, adultery, murder, and repentance, shows us the power of God’s grace and mercy upon us. David showed us that God knows the heart, and God loves the repentant heart that sees it’s sin, and desires to repent of that sin, and draw closer to God in dependance on him.

How do you let God be your steering wheel? How could you possibly know from God which way to turn in your life? How could you know whether to turn to the right, or the left, or to continue on the same path you are on? Matthew 6:33 Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. It is that simple; seek God every single day in His Word and prayer. Spending daily time with God will allow you to clearly hear God’s voice and discern the direction he wants you to go in your life. God is around you every day, but Satan through your attention to the world has numbed your senses to God. Satan has filled your mind with the white noise of this world, and only daily time in the Bible and prayer will filter out that noise so that you can hear the One who desires to tell you which direction to turn.

It’s gonna be ok

It’s gonna be ok

Matthew 6:25-34    “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (ESV)

I have written in bold print in the margin of my Bible beside this passage, “DO NOT WORRY”. I openly struggle with anxiety and depression, but I do not believe there are many others out there that can say before God they do not worry. Satan is the master deceiver, and a strong tool in his arsenal is the deception wrapped in doubt. When you look at worry in its simplest form it is fear, fear of the unknown. Fear is not from God but from the author of deception and death. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Satan is planting in your mind that you have no security; that your life and the outcome of it could fall at any time. He wants you to think you are a failure, and all your eternity is in question. He may even planted the ultimate deception in your head of life without eternity. This is all there is; get all you can while you are here.

It is no coincidence that this passage falls on the heels of the passage about wealth (Matthew 6:19-25). I bet that the majority of your fears fall under the heading of money. Will I have enough to pay my bills; will I have enough saved for college; will I be able to get that new…….; the list is endless in our lives wrapped around our finances. Believe me, my house of cards fell, and the money worries have been a big part of my life in recent years. But God has shown me that he will never fail me; just enough in the nick of time, every time, to do or pay what must be done. God is even letting that doubt Satan is planting to work for good when you are humbled and must look to Him for it all. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. There can be a new found strength and relationship with God built as you see Him never fail you. Satan’s plan was to draw you away from God, but if you turn to God you will come to understand this passage about not worrying. When you worry you become introverted, and when you are self absorbed you are not an effective disciple to spread the Good News that He calls you to do.

It has been proven that worry and stress are bad for your physical health. They take years off your life. Christ told us that in this Sermon on the Mount 2000 years ago. 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Spend today focused on the promise in Matthew 6:33, and do not worry about tomorrow, for you may miss the promise of today.

100% guaranteed ROI(return on investment)

100% guaranteed ROI(return on investment)

Proverbs 11:4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

The first thought that comes to my head when I read this scripture is that old saying, “ You can’t take it with you.” This passage from Solomon could be viewed in many contexts, even the idea of trying to buy your way out of persecution. The seemingly rich may enjoy somewhat power for their short time here, but there will come a day their wealth is meaningless; Solomon described all their hard works as “folly and vanity” here and in the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Solomon had attained immeasurable wealth and wisdom, all as a gift from God. He had  come to realize that happiness was not found in wealth, but in ones relationship with God.

I chased that dream of financial success. I thought the harder I worked, the better it became, and eventually there would come a point that life got easier. There had to be a point that your hard work paid off; a crest that brought balances of finances and responsibilities. If there is such a pivot in life, I failed miserably trying to attain it. Solomon, who was the wisest and richest man in history, failed also.  Maybe you believe you are the one who can find balance in wealth, happiness, and faith; that no rich man before you has attained. You are serving one God or the other, their is no middle ground. Christ made this perfectly clear at his great Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

God has really been working on me for well over six years adjusting my priorities. He first spoke to me through my son, realizing I did not spend any time with him. That was a big part of my testimony when I went against the world and downsized my business in the midst of a booming economy, so I could spend more time with my family. God has continued to sanctify me in the realization of what is important; the removal of all the stuff that cluttered my focus on Him. We are about to sell our big house, and hope to simplify life even more. In this simplicity is found peace. Peace is not found in 90hr weeks to pay for the house, the boat, the car, the next toy that gets your attention. Peace is found in a heart that pursues God and the things of him daily. Matthew 6:33 Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. All you have to do is to put all your focus and energies on God and he will take care of the rest of your needs, for eternity.

Spiritual cleansing

Spiritual cleansing

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

I am really trying to draw near to God right now. In a whole hearted pursuit, denial of self, seeking an intimacy to be able to hear God’s voice speaking to me. I have a big load on my back that He has placed there, and I do not want to rely on my own abilities for the solutions to it. I understand what He brings me to, he will deliver me through. I know that he uses prayer, his Word, and his servants to speak to me, and I do not want to miss any of those opportunities. I am trying to cleanse myself from all the dirt walking in this world stains me with. Every day comes more distractions, more grime to clog your mind, placed there by the enemy to keep your eyes off Christ. It is good to take a spiritual bath, a cleansing if you will from time to time. When was the last time you did all you could to live for God?

Walking in the light that John describes is that intimacy with God. The fellowship is gained both with God and other believers, all that is strengthening to us. John had begun this passage speaking to the hypocrisy of his day, of how people would say one thing and yet live another. The lofty claims, and the sin filled lives. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. God’s light represents his knowledge and purity; it was a reflection of the Old Testament teachings of that representation of God as light. You cannot claim this intimacy and live for this world. If your life revolves around decisions based on your next venture, your next purchase, your self worth in the eyes of others; you are not walking in the light with God. You are lying to yourself.

The closer you walk with God the more the revelation of your sin becomes evident to you. Light dis-spells darkness, and His light will reveal what you try to hide from others. The closer you become to Christ, the more you feel the weight of your sin, and the more you are led to repentance before Him. This continual repentant heart is a heart that realizes the magnitude of God’s grace in sacrificing His Son. This heart is moved closer to God in thanksgiving for that sacrifices. John 12:46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. These are the keys to living a abiding life in Christ. When you seek God and not the things of this world, He will draw you closer, and your answers to that pursuit will allow you to gain that fellowship that John describes. It can all start today, for you are not guaranteed tomorrow.
