A Choice: God’s Word or TV

1 John 4:4-6     You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

John is speaking directly to the false teachers of the day. Those that had divided the Word, and transformed it unto their liking. They had mangled it into a blend of philosophies and religions, and twisted it into religions that suited lifestyles; religions that suited some, elevated others, but for the most part took Christ out of the picture. If He remained there, he had been transformed into differing ideals; not remaining the Incarnated Son of God that had come to save the world from sin. They had provided their concoctions that would, as the apostle Paul spoke of their ministries, teaching what people wanted to hear. 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

You are given the blessing of the Holy Spirit living inside of you, when you answer that call upon your life of the grace of God found in Salvation. The Spirit is your teacher; it is He who grants you the understanding of spiritual things. It is He inside you that makes you see things through your heart. John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. It is He that makes you question, what you hear. That is the discernment of the Holy Spirit living inside you, and the greater discernment is cultivated by a heart that is in daily pursuit in God’s Word. There are many wolves in sheep’s clothing today preaching a blend of their own around the gospel of God. The prosperity preaching by so many elevated in today’s media has become the accepted normal. This blend of Christ and all the financial and material blessings he wants you to have, fit very well into the American society with the desire of excess.

The blessings that God intends for you are eternal; they are not money, houses, cars, vacations, power, and all the riches that are measured by the standards of this world. If you believe that you have been deceived by a false prophet. You may have come to find Christ, but you need to concentrate on following your Savior in the Word, and not the false preacher on TV. Pray for the Holy Spirit living inside you to open your eyes to God through His Word. You will find eternal riches in the peace that comes in the understanding of the Word. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. If you continue to feed yourself by sitting under the false teachers, you will only be led farther away in the opposite direction.

It should hurt

It should hurt

1 John 4:4-6     You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

John is really trying to help his readers to be able to discern the differences in the truth and the false teachings that had infected early Christianity. Just as today there were teachers who picked apart the Word of God; they selected only the parts that appealed, and twisted their ideals into their own religion. They truths became so twisted you could not determine where one started and ended. This problem still is prevalent today in so many ministries and pulpits. They bring just enough of Christ to tickle your ears, then their paths become soft, and their doctrines have no spine. They only preach heaven, but never preach hell. The realization of one’s soul that is lost in sin, and the damnation of it without Christ, draws that soul to a much deeper appreciation and servant heart and life of a disciple as we are called to be as a result of His sacrifice.

John continually points to Christ’s Holy Spirit that lives inside each believer, and the discernment that comes with His presence there. The “we” in this epistle is referring to the apostles, and the sound doctrines of Christ. The “they” in this epistle is referring to the false teachers of that day, and their twists on Christianity rooted in their own sin. They are of this world, and their views derived from it. People who listen to them are lost in that same self centered, worldly, materialistic viewpoints from which it was bred. 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. It would be very easy to take all the positives of Christianity and twist it to fit ones own ideals; it would roll into the benefits of self, and not the convictions of sin.

Do you listen only to the soft preaching? Do you only want to hear what makes you feel good because you have enough bad to deal with in your life? That is understandable only to a point. There is eternal salvation and paradise found in Jesus Christ alone; hope for an eternity with Him and the unimaginable pleasures of heaven with Him. But their is also a call to the conviction, repentance of sin, and a life focused on serving Him for our short time here. We are not called to a life of ease here; we are called to become a slave to Him who died for us and to seek to spread the hope that lies within us. Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Find a pastor that preaches the whole truth from the Word of God, and let His Spirit inside you work out those convictions of sin, to let Him mold you into the image of His Son.

Tell them the truth

Tell them the truth

2 Timothy 4:3-4   For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

“Yea, I know but the truth hurts; I don’t want to embarrass them; I don’t want to hurt their feelings.” You need to tell them. Are you a true friend? True friends tell you the hard truths about yourselves; the painful things that are ignored otherwise. I sure wish at many times looking back on my life I had true friends to rescue me from painful circumstances. We so many times think we may be protecting someone by ignoring something, when in reality we are furthering the damage. These people in your life become the only ones in your life that matter, when truth is revealed.

Paul was trying to encourage Timothy to remain true to God’s Word and His Gospel. To preach the Truth at all times. Paul was so concerned that Timothy stay grounded, he emphasized this by using the word truth 11 times in his two short letters to Timothy. There were so many false teachers of that day that could lead others astray by filling their ears with what they wanted to hear. A feel good gospel; no pain all gain. Their is power in the conviction of the Holy Spirit; a power of  conviction and repentance of sin and change. The Apostle John speaks of this power; John 16:8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Our society, even our churches have become soft; lacking the spine to take a stand and tell the truth. . Their is pain and consequences in this world; there is a need of the power of the Holy Spirit to tell us these truths that hurt as when a true friend does. Everything is not as it seems; everything must be revealed; everything may hurt. When we come to know the truth through sound doctrine and the power of the Spirit; there is spiritual growth within us. Paul commanded Timothy to remain grounded; to preach the whole truth, not just selected pieces that make the listeners feel good about themselves and life. 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. “You cannot grow in Christ without pain”, Dr. Michael Youssef said yesterday in his radio broadcast. Do you only tell others what you think they want to hear? If so are you their friend?
