The Teacher

The Teacher

1 Corinthians 2:11-12     For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

I parked on this scripture for a couple of days. So many paths to take here, but all of them speak of the Holy Spirit that is given to believers. Paul had just talked about the mystery of God revealed; the understanding that He gives to us through his Son and his Spirit. The things of God that those that are not children of God do not understand. Paul pours out his heart in prayer to the Ephesians that they may come to understand what is found in and through Christ. Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height– 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Paul is pleading that you come to faith in Jesus Christ, to answer that tug that He is placing on your heart. Paul knows that only through faith, are the mysteries of God revealed.

I never knew until much later in life that an unsaved person cannot understand the Bible. When they read it, to a hardened heart it makes no sense. If it is approached with the desire of a humble heart to find God, He will reveal himself to them. It is in that act of God that he reveals the mystery of Himself. In that act of seeking, His Son is found, and hopefully the lost is eternally saved through God’s work in their hearts and His Word. The best book I have been told for the lost to seek God in is the Gospel of John. You simply cannot read John’s gospel and not see Christ and his deity there. When Christ spoke to Martha, just before He raised her brother Lazarus from the dead, He asked and assured her; 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11). John’s gospel pierces the soul with these questions, questions that the soul begs for answers to.

Throughout this passage in 1 Corinthians, Paul is speaking to the division in the church, much of it relative to the supposed wisdom of men and their sects of division. Paul points to Christ and his Spirit to be the only One lifted up. The teachers of men do not need to be elevated; it is the message, not the messenger that we are to praise. Those that God entrusts to us to aid in helping us to understand are held to a higher standard by him. That weight of responsibility is great, and you should be committed to prayer for your pastors and teachers. All that they seek to aid in revealing to you is a lost cause without a humble heart and a heart that has found wisdom through His Spirit. Once you possess Him, all that you read in His Word will seem clear. You will begin to understand and discern more clearly those that teach. It is all found first with a humble heart that realizes you cannot do it on your own.

Do you hear Him?

Do you hear Him?

Romans 8:23-25   Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

In my study of abiding in Christ, or remaining in Christ, so much has come of the desire that longs within us. A person who abides is a person who is keen to that voice inside of them, guiding them along the path of life. It is a person who sometimes seems to go against the grain, away from the crowd, but yet seems fulfilled and content because they are with Christ there. When we are saved we are given a gift from God by the Holy Spirit that comes to dwell inside us. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. This gift brings a change of consciousness, a view in a different light from what the world sees. It is that lifting of the burden of sin from our souls and the guidance He provides for our remaining time here. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

The Holy Spirit also brings a hope that the world cannot steal away. You can grieve the Spirit by trying to silence His voice inside you, and your hope will dwindle. The more keen you are to His voice, the greater your hope becomes. Hope and faith are entwined together and strengthen each other. As a person who seeks God and the things of God, the Spirit becomes more active in their lives. His guidance becomes clearer and their obedience becomes natural. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Start to spend some time seeking God in prayer about becoming obedient to the workings of the Spirit inside of you. That obedience is the path of righteousness, and that path leads you closer to God, and the things of God. You only get there by a constant pursuit, not grieving the Spirit by remaining still. Your relationship should always move forward, and the hope that lies within you is urging you in that pursuit.

Grow w/o Food?

Grow w/o Food?

1 Peter 2:1-3 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

How does anything grow? Food & water right? Taking that principle into mind, we therefore must be fed to grow closer to God. If we are desiring to live a better life, and to develop more than a surface relationship with God, then we must spend time in His Word. We cannot grow without the nourishment that the Word of God brings into our lives, and as a result of it, we will become the better person we desired to be to start with. Regeneration and Purification are brought by Christ into your life upon Salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

The more time you spend in God’s Word, the closer you draw to Him. The Spirit will begin to reveal and convict you of sin, and will provide the way to escape. God desires you to be like Christ, and He accomplishes this through the power of the Spirit living inside you, and the conviction and power of His Word. John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. Matthew Henry states it so well in his commentary on 2 Peter, “The word of God is the great instrument of a sinner’s purification: Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth. The gospel is called truth, in opposition to types and shadows, to error and falsehood. This truth is effectual to purify the soul, if it be obeyed, Jn. 17:17 . Many hear the truth, but are never purified by it, because they will not submit to it nor obey it. The Spirit of God is the great agent in the purification of man’s soul. The Spirit convinces the soul of its impurities, furnishes those virtues and graces that both adorn and purify, such as faith (Acts. 15:9 ), hope (1 Jn. 3:3 ), the fear of God (Ps. 34:9 ), and the love of Jesus Christ. The Spirit excites our endeavours, and makes them successful.”

Your life will never be the same if you pursue God through daily time with Him and His Word. I can promise you that, for that is my testimony. It all started to change, when I started to spend time with Him every day. My “big brother” / best friend told me once, “If you keep doing what you have been doing, you will keep getting what you have been getting.” Try if for 30 days, and then see if you can stop feeding on the Word of God.

Grieving the Spirit

Boy I am opening up a can of worms this morning, but after a long talk yesterday, and a situation with someone I knew was doing something very wrong at another church, God has just really burdened me heavily with this. Probably one of the “great debates”, I have tried to state my views as God has shown me. It is not a popular belief, but it is mine.

Grieving the Spirit

Ephesians 5:18   And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

Hard Truth – becoming drunk is biblically wrong. I am not saying here, do not drink, for I do not know the line at which Christ judges, but becoming drunk is simply stated in Ephesians 5:18. There we are simply told not to, and being told that we are wasting our lives away. But apart from that verse, let’s look at Ephesians 4:30   And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  When we accept Salvation, we are temples of the Holy Spirit who comes to live within us. We have Christ as our conscious now. Our conscious is hurting, for our relationship is broken when we give in to that temptation.

Some people think that Salvation is their get out of jail free card. That they can accept Christ, live it up now, and play that card before they die. What if, you die unexpectedly? What a dishonor to the one who came and died for you! Romans 6:1  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? An assurance of Salvation is your deliverance from past sins, and your denial of present sins that you know are wrong. You simply do not want to do them anymore. Been there, done that, thank you God for delivering me from that.
