Take a deep breath and read

James 1:18-21      Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

In this epistle James begins with writing about the trials of life. We all have them, we all endure them, we all go somewhere to deal with them. Do you self-medicate with any type of substance such as alcohol or drugs? Do you just become angry and lash out constantly when you are under the pressure of a trial? Do you simply just retreat into depression and hide from the world? There are so many ways that we find ourselves coping when life gets hard. God allows these things to draw us closer to Him, and at some point in your life when you come to realize that, you will also find you are the closest to God when you are under these great strains in life. You will even likely at some point cherish the strain for the intimacy it brings with God.

James is a great place to spend in God’s Word when you are facing these troubles. As he spoke of these trials, he transitions into how to prepare ourselves in hearing from God in them. When we go to God’s Word, are we already mad at God; are we angry and have our defenses up? Have we come at God with the “how, or why, or anger” in our souls? James tells us to come to Him in meekness, with a humble heart, with a mind that desires to listen, not to debate. With that spirit we can come to see the greatness of God’s grace in His Word, and even the situation. It may also be a time that we see the discipline of God in these trials, but we must be prepared and accept that possibility.

Matthew Henry points to all that we hear in God’s Word is to the working of the gospel within us, as to the salvation of our souls. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. The word of God has a central message; to point you to Him. It points to the grace of God found throughout it; it points to the provision through His Son Jesus Christ in it; it points to His Sovereignty throughout it. All through it He seeks to make you more like Christ; to live a life as a disciple of Christ, and to enable you to therefore reach others for Christ. In this book is found the love of Christ, and the keys to you living a life for Him. The more time you spend in God’s Word every single day, the better prepared you are when the trials of life come. Your spirit is already humbled from what He has shown you, and you understand this trial you are facing is another revelation you are about to receive.

Accepts and assists

Accepts and assists

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

The last 36 hours are a blur. I had some sort of illness that resulted in a fever, and almost no sleep the night before. On top of all that my mind was racing with thoughts of my testimony coming up this weekend; I knew this time was different, and I know God is laying the word disciple on my heart. Webster’s dictionary defines a disciple as: one who accepts and assists in the spreading of the doctrines of another. Do you? Are you? Is being a Christian different from being a disciple? It should not be for Christ last commands called us to go forth and spread the Good News that He brought to a dying world (Matthew 28:19-20). Christianity does not mean that you claim the security of Salvation and live a life unchanged after it. There should be such a change in your heart and life that the evidences of His Spirit living inside of you are there for all to see.

Take a real look at yourself; list your top five priorities in life. The true order of the things that matter to you the most. If you are placing your career, success, family, health, security, even your own life at number one, you are not a disciple of Christ. The realization of your eternal damnation as a sinner, and that God himself came to earth for your redemption, should humble your heart to a point of living a life dedicated to Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. The only way to justify sin before a Holy and righteous God is a holy and righteous sacrifice. There was only one that could do that; Jesus Christ came as fully God and fully man. He lived a life that we were originally designed to live, perfect and sinless. He died upon that cross and bore the weight of all sin upon Himself that God might see you righteous through His Son. He paved the way in a free gift of grace, and He will present the invitation to join him to humble, repentant hearts.

There must be a point in your life you realize that scale of your life condemned in sin. With this comes the realization of the need of a Savior; and the means of this which Christ provided for you. GOD sacrificed His Son for you! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. You have no means by which you are ever to earn it, but you are called to work it out in the acts of being a disciple. You are called to “accept and assist” the ministry of spreading the Gospel. James 2:17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. You are to live a life in daily pursuit of God and the things of God. You are to live a life with an eternal focus; a life that sees the struggles in it as temporary, as means to draw you closer to God. You are to place Christ above everything and everyone; He humbled himself to the point of death for you; can’t you die to Him?

Where is your Zeal?

Where is your Zeal?
Proverbs 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day;

Zeal is not a word commonly used today. If it was it would probably be in the context of material possessions, or a personal drive towards a goal. Zeal is defined as:: eagerness and ardent interest in pursuit of something : fervor. I think simply stated your zeal is what drives you. As I head out today to enjoy time on a dirt bike, I realize it is where my zeal was for many years. It was how you defined me. It was my everything, and what my life pursuit consisted of; it was my idol. It is now a huge part of my testimony of God’s work in my life, and the delivery from that idol. What do you pursue with zeal, forsaking many things focused on that pursuit, now realizing it has become an idol?

Romans 10:1-4 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Paul was speaking of Israel and their hearts for God, but yet their understanding was wrong. They believed they could earn their way into heaven. This problem still consists today in our self-righteous world, but that is not the Gospel of Christ who has come to save the world.

Having your focus on God and the pursuit of the things of God is where your zeal must lie. It is summarized in two incredible scriptures in Revelation of how to live a zealous life for Christ and the rewards that follow. Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Christ is not promising an easy road in a life focused on Him, for He is telling us He will correct and punish us for our sin. But He is pursuing you, and offering an eternal life with Him as a result of answering His knock and the repentance and forgiveness of sin. A zeal for God will drive you like nothing else.  For a heart for God sees none other that can promise anything but temporal pleasure in a fleeting world; yet a zealous heart for Him reaps eternal reward.
