Deeper and Deeper

Deeper and Deeper

Mark 8:31-33 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Jesus was plainly giving those closest to him a glimpse into the future, he was telling them of the sovereignty of God and the plans for Jesus’ life. You know they were amazed and terrified at what they were hearing. It is of no surprise that the zealous Peter spoke out against it, but Peter did not realize he was speaking out against God. Peter did not know he was being used as Satan’s mouthpiece at the feet of Jesus. There have been many times Satan will use us in the midst of an argument, and only afterward will we realize what has happened and how terrifying that realization becomes. We too may have argued with God. We may have argued against the sovereignty of God.

I could give you countless examples of those in my circle suffering on many levels right now. These could be physically, mentally, financially, loss of a loved one, loss of a job, how long the list could be. Many times it is a combination package. I could personally attest of roads I have traveled in many of these; of the current difficult path God has me on now. In the midst of these trials, those in the faith have a peace that the world does not understand. Many times we are asked how are we dealing with the situation, and there He opens he door for us to share our faith. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (II Corinthians1:3-4 NKJV) The peace that comforts us in the midst of life’s tough situations is the prescience of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Spirit gives us enough of a glimpse of Gods sovereignty that we know he is in control, that he knows the outcome, that he is not going to leave us nor forsake us there. There are scripture references for each of those statements.

God will allow you to go down paths in your life that you would never travel by choice. He will guide you through incredibly tough situations in life to show you your need for him and deepen you understanding of his sovereignty. Without these tough roads you would never know the power of God, you would never know your need for God, you would never experience or desire to worship him at any level. Praise him through the storms of life for you are closer to him in the midst of them. In that closeness he is drawing those on the outside to himself as the see the evidence of your faith. Let him take you deeper and deeper.

Proud or Pray?

Proud or Pray?

Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar- Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Matthew 16:17, 23 NKJV)

There are only six verses that separate the pinnacle and the pit of Peters life. Jesus had commended him as a rock and cursed him as Satan. The mind of the most zealous disciple must have been spinning at what had transpired in however short this timespan. In his pride of the commendation of Christ, he likely had not seen the wide open door Satan had walked in through it. The outspoken had been chastised severely for the words he pridefully spoke to his savior and king. Peter had no idea the level of spiritual warfare that was present in his life. I cannot help but feel the Holy Spirit revealed it somewhat to him in this. We all know Peter failed greatly denying Christ in a latter point of his life; another battle that God allowed to fulfill His purpose and also show Peter his daily need for Him.

In my short time as a pastor I experienced a level of spiritual warfare I had not known. I humbly attest to you, that you do not know the level of warfare your pastor and those in ministry experience. I gained a lifetime of respect in one year of ministry. Without a doubt my level of support for those in ministry grew, and my heart to you that tear down your leaders is that He opens your heart to a glimpse of what they face. That glimpse will forever change you, and bend you to pray for your pastors and those in ministry as never before.

The closeness of these two passages should point us to our daily need for Him. It should show us that there is a world we are in that we cannot see, but directly effects us. Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. (I Peter 5:5-9 NKJV) In the middle of that passage is the proof of your enemy and the need for you to remain faithful seeking God. There is an entire sermon there, but you must simply see that a prideful heart will fail, and a humble heart will pursue. Everything that you and the zealous Peter face can be used to draw glory to God. Only if you don’t try to do it alone.

Moving forward

Moving forward

Mark 9:28-29    And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

Christ had taken Peter, James, and John up onto the mountaintop. He wanted his closest three to be with him during this incredible time. It was on that mountaintop, that we learn of his transfiguration. Christ changed before their eyes; they were privy to a glimpse of his glory, in all of his glory. Elijah and Moses appeared and spoke with Jesus, this was happening right before their eyes. Peter, oh the outspoken Peter, had to say something, when nothing was truly needed to be said. 5 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”– 6 because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid. The next scripture is God speaking, Peter hush, listen to God. 7 And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” As they came down the mountain, Christ told them to keep it to themselves what they had seen.

They came down to find the remaining disciples being questioned by the scribes. They had not been able to heal a man who was demon possessed. I cannot help but picture Peter in his zeal from the mountaintop, wanting to say, “I got this one”. Christ steps in and frees the man from his demon possession; the father’s faith grew & it was evident for all to see the power of Christ before them. The father had pled for Christ to help his unbelief. The disciples were perplexed as why they could not perform the exorcism. The hold on the boy that the evil spirit had was likely a strong one, since it had been there from birth. This demon was not likely an easy one to cast out for the disciples; Christ was encouraging them to strengthen their faith in these scriptures above.

When you have big things in life before you, there should be a deep desire to draw closer to God. Hopefully you do not run from, but run to. God either allows or designs these things to draw you closer, to show you your need for him. A heart that desires God and the things of God daily is a heart that responds to God when big things arrive. The backstory of Christ healing the man when the disciples could not is to encourage them to be in constant pursuit of drawing closer to God, to growing their faith, to never feel able in their own power, but to be in pursuit of His power.
