Turn the cup over

Turn the cup over

Philippians 2:14-17    Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. 17 Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.

The greatest devotional writer of all time in my humble opinion is Oswald Chambers (My Utmost for His Highest). Throughout his writings that truly stretch your thinking and understanding of God; he uses the phrase of being poured out. It is a means of showing his heart of total commitment, of total abandonment to Christ. He holds nothing in reserve, but gives his mind, body, and soul to God entirely. He pours himself into his writings and is inspired by the truths he finds in God’s Word. His writing style is one that you must study, you must slow down to get to the meat of his messages; but their is fruit from his labor of love; you come to understand a truth from God in his humble servant.

Paul is using the phrase because at the time a drink offering was familiar as part of the animal sacrifices of the day. It may have been poured out on the altar, or the ground, but God had spoken to Israel with commands regarding the wine in the sacrificial system (Numbers 15). Paul is showing total commitment to obeying God’s commands and ministries laid our before him. Paul spends this selection of scripture speaking directly into obedience of what God is calling us to do. We are to seek obedience so earnestly that we care not what; where; or how the call. Matthew Henry states, “It becomes those to be blameless and harmless who stand in such a relation, and are favored with such a privilege.” What God is laying on your heart is unique; you are favored in that call.

Do you pour yourself out for God? Do you hold onto that last drop for yourself? Others may not see that you are only giving 75% of the duties they ask, but God knows WHY you are not giving him your all, of the reason why you are holding back or just saying “no”. The only way to get closer to God is to obey the calls that God places on you. The acts of obedience are the steps on the stairway to heaven. Every act in total abandonment draws you one step closer to God. 2 Timothy 4:6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. Paul used this phrase again near the end of his life; he lived this phrase every day of his life.

Needing to know

Needing to know

Philippians 4:11-13 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I sat out in the cool morning air in the peace of a quiet early Saturday morning and talked to God. I was praying about “needing to know” on many things, and one really big thing. I guess I was wanting the stars to align in my own personal billboard message from God. I came in and researched “need to know” in the Bible and came upon the scriptures above. Paul was speaking of contentment wherever Christ had him for the day. There comes a point in your growth that you begin to understand those scriptures and God’s Sovereignty, or control over your life.

But there is also moving to the next steps in obedience, or acts of faith in doing so. Oswald Chambers ‘My Utmost for His Highest’ spoke directly to it this morning. “We never know the joy of self-sacrifice until we abandon in every particular. Self-surrender is the most difficult thing – I will if…I Oh, well, I suppose I must devote my life to God. There is none of the joy of self-sacrifice in that.” Christ speaks of those sacrifices and steps of faith repeatedly in the Gospels. Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Deny yourself simply means putting Christ first. First in all things, period. Our selfish, sinful nature constantly battles with these things.

I am a ‘thinker/planner’ and have repeatedly been accused of ‘thinking things to death’. As part of the management of a company, it is my responsibility to think steps ahead, and to be planning for those steps to come. Christ calls us to release that planning and control to Him in the denying of ourselves as in Matthew 16. Chambers speaks of the joy, or lack thereof in that abandonment. If you too are struggling in areas of your life, and ‘needing to know’, you must seek God and His Word for the answers, or you may be leaning on your own understanding; far inferior to the Creator and Sovereign ruler of the universe and your life.

Chambers devotional w/ my comments on “The Call”

The Constraint Of The Call

“Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!”
1 Corinthians 9:16

Beware of stopping your ears to the call of God. Everyone who is saved is called to testify to the fact; but that is not the call to preach, it is merely an illustration in preaching. Paul is referring to the pangs produced in him by the constraint to preach the Gospel. Never apply what Paul says in this connection to souls coming in contact with God for salvation. There is nothing easier than getting saved because it is God’s sovereign work – Come unto Me and I will save you. Our Lord never lays down the conditions of discipleship as the conditions of salvation. We are condemned to salvation through the Cross of Jesus Christ. Discipleship has an option with it – “IF any man. . . ‘

Paul’s words have to do with being made a servant of Jesus Christ, and our permission is never asked as to what we will do or where we will go. God makes us broken bread and poured-out wine to please Himself. To be “separated unto the gospel” means to hear the call of God; and when a man begins to overhear that call, then begins agony that is worthy of the name. Every ambition is nipped in the bud, every desire of life quenched, every outlook completely extinguished and blotted out, saving one thing only – “separated unto the gospel.” Woe be to the soul who tries to put his foot in any other direction when once that call has come to him. This College exists for you, and you – to see whether God has a man or woman here who cares about proclaiming His Gospel; to see whether God grips you. And be ware of competitors when God does grip you.

Oswald Chambers    My Utmost for His Higest

Commentary:

I missed yesterday’s writing, and just returned to it. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered this one, for it struck deeply. Ever since feeling ‘the call’ just over a year ago, I have learned many things. I have sought and received counsel from many peers and elders, and those that have felt the call. There is something that is hard to describe about it, unless you have experienced it. I have even been told that I didn’t get it, and that wasn’t ‘the call.’ Therefore I questioned it for a long while. But through consistent seeking of only God’s Will for my life, it has been confirmed from within.

My pastor’s advise has rang as the most solid. He simply said the best conformation it to just try and do anything else. In other words try to deny it, or even pursue it by what I felt was goods motives. God has the power to allow or deny your paths in life. He has the power to control what you futilely think you have in your grasp all along. What you may have placed in high regards, will no longer seem to matter. The intricate details of those pursuits that were before readily available, now seemingly disappear entirely.

The only thing that consumes you is to spread the Good News, and the glory of God. It is a fire that burns from deep within, and is all consuming. It is a fire that is the only place that you feel joy. It is how God molds you into what He wants you to be. “Broken bread and poured out wine.” Use me Lord…..use me.
