Have you ever Fasted?

Have you ever Fasted?

Matthew 6:16-18    “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Some friends and myself are doing a one-day liquid fast today. I don’t typically reveal that I am fasting, but today I felt that tug to share, for many of you may not understand. It was only a few years ago that I had never heard of it, much less ever tried it. Today I am before you to testify of it. What is a Fast? A fast is the denial of self in an attempt to draw closer to God. It is typically the denial of food and the pleasures found in it. The hunger pains serve as a reminder to seek God in prayer for nourishment. Simplified, the hungrier you get, the more you pray, the closer you get to God; it works through the power of prayer and God’s understanding of the sacrifice you are trying to make with your hearts desire of drawing closer to him. It is not a diet, and will never be honored as such.

Fasting is all throughout the Old Testament. It was part of the traditions of the Israelites and past down for generations. Christ is speaking of it here in his Sermon on the Mount in Matthew above. He is speaking of those that desire the pity of men during a fast, and of how they will receive that pity as their only reward. But He is also speaking of those that privately fast seeking only God, and of how God will reward them. This passage is closely related to the passage before on prayer. Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Prayer and Fasting are meant to be private conversations between you and God. They are never meant to draw attention to you. They serve as a means to get you closer to God.

There is not a rulebook for Fasting. There is a lot of information out there of peoples opinions on the rules of Fasting; it is an act between only you and God. It should be entered into with prayer, for a heart, mind, body, and soul seeking Him. It should be viewed as holy; it is not a flippant act taking with light regard. If you “cheat”, or treat it as such, the One who you are trying to honor is dis-honored. What would you do; what would you sacrifice to draw closer to God? Is your hearts desire for Him great enough to make a sacrifice? Think of the sacrifices He made for you.

Fatherly Rebuke

Fatherly Rebuke

Hebrews 12:6    6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”

Chapter 11 in Hebrews is the chapter of the heros of faith such as Moses and Abraham. It speaks of all those in the Old Testament that both suffered, and or persevered through their faith. Then as we go into Chapter 12, it speaks of the sufferings we may also face as a child of God.  “For consider Him (Christ) who endured such hostility….lest you become weary and discouraged” (vs.3). God is the perfect Father whom both will reward and discipline. He is truly our role model as fathers ourselves, but we simply cannot hold to His standards. We are more concerned with being our children’s friends, than our children’s parents.

Some come to faith, as a means of escaping the woes of this world. They have been told that once they become Christians, life will be easy. But if we accept that God is our Father, we must accept the rebuke of Him. Because He is just, He only could not rebuke perfection, and the only perfection that has walked this earth, was His Son, that was sent here to die for our sins. “But if you are without chastening, of which you all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not sons.” (vs. 8). That is a scary verse if you come to faith on those grounds, and continue to sin, living a life of ease without rebuke. Matthew Henry said “to go on in sin without a rebuke is a sad sing of alienation from God.” Proverbs 3:11-12  “ My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction;  For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights”. Be thankful when God convicts you, and punishes you for a sin, for you have the security that you are a child of His.

Stuff or Tresures? 01/23/12

I really don’t know how I ended up in Ecclesiastes this morning, but it sure is a book relevant to the day in which we live. A book written over 2000 years ago, and yet this society today that breeds the pursuit of possessions is straight out of the Old Testament. I was just as guilty as the next guy a few years ago. I mean I had the idea the one who died with the most toys wins right? Over the past couple of years, through some real hard realities in the areas of finances, I have come to realize how much stuff meant to me. But as a result of those trials, I have also realized how little they mean to me. I still have some toys, but a LOT less stuff, and the importance I place on it is MUCH less. My boys just can’t understand how I sell everything. I have told them everything but them and their mom is always for sale…..it’s just stuff.

Stuff or Treasures?

Ecclesiastes 1:14     I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

We all must work. We are even called to dedicate and perform that work to the Lord. “Whatever you do, do it with all your heart as working for the Lord, and not for men.” (Colossians 3:23). We all labor to provide for ourselves and our families, and for things we desire. But somewhere in us  is that desire for always more. The wants, far outweigh the needs, and we find ourselves in constant pursuit of “stuff”. The world we live in teaches us that more stuff brings happiness, joy, and success. All we have to do is put our minds to the task, and we shall succeed. If not, there will be a program to help you fix what you are doing wrong.

That is not what Christ teaches. Place your treasure and focus on things to come in Heaven. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34) If we are in constant pursuit of worldly possessions, our heart will not be in constant pursuit of Christ. We cannot serve two masters, God and money. Work diligently as you are working for God, but use those resources He has given you to focus on Him. You can make a difference in where you work every day, in the kingdom of God for eternity.
