Big things

Big things

1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. (NIV)

We have entered the month of the celebration of our Lord Jesus Christ’s birth. The holiday season if you will; the point in which all of time centers around. There is no point of which to argue that our time stamp revolves around the birth of Christ no matter your belief; there is a marker set in history of BC (before Christ), and AD (after death). Even with that historical marker some argue who and what Christ was and is. Such a big deal…..that He divided time. My heart this week has been wrapped up in big picture things in my life; at the church, at my business, in my life, and in my study of the Word. So many big things with so many levels of cause and effect. These things are likened to these divisions Paul speaks of here; the opposite of unity. I cannot begin to open the roads my mind is going down, but I have included a passage that I pray the Holy Spirit will speak to you. It is one of of unity, of the centrality in Christ, in the One who divided the time that our world revolves around.

1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” (ESV)

Weighted

Weighted

1 Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!

I have been laying in bed this morning reflecting on yesterday, and trying to figure out how to tell my story without making it too personal. A couple of my friends were sharing on FB the urgency of the Gospel. They had come to know Jesus Christ, but yet they also looked inward towards the commands of Christ to share what they now possess. They know the changed life, but are they keeping it to themselves? Even a famous atheist was quoted recently saying, ““How much do you have to HATE somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?” (Penn Jillette) That is radical coming from a person who does not believe in God. Even in some twisted way, he sees the urgency of the Truth.

God laid someone square on my heart earlier this year. With many excuses, I was disobedient to what He was telling me to do. I had justified it in so many ways to keep my mouth shut for so long. A turn of events put us alone yesterday; a turn of events that could have taken many turns, but I KNEW it was God placing us together, for both of our sakes. A true test of my heart, and possibly a true test of theirs. I was obedient and laid it all out there; only God knows what is to come of the hope that I shared. What if God did not give me that timetable? What if God removed them and I took to my grave the knowledge of my disobedience that could have played a part of their eternal pain? How much did I hate them as that atheist claimed? Whoa…..

Paul was sharing the weight laid on his heart for Christ. Paul was sharing the NECESSITY that he felt for sharing the Gospel. The weight that God had placed on him for sharing with all others the weight of the sacrifice of His Son. God is saying, “Do you not see what I did for you? Do you not see what He did for you?” How can we not feel that burden to share? The great Charles Spurgeon wrote, “”Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you are not saved yourself, be sure of that!” I humbly, agree with that statement of arguable the greatest preacher of all time. If you do not feel a great burden to share the Gospel, do you truly possess what you claim?

What is a Doxology?

What is a Doxology?

Jude 1:24-25     Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, 25 To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.

This morning I started my quiet time out in the book of Jude. The book of Jude is only one chapter, 25 verses, and power packed in that short time. Jude was the brother of Jesus Christ, and James the apostle. At the end of this book is the closing doxology, and that was what stopped me in my tracks this morning. I had grown up with the term all my life in church; it was printed in every church bulletin; I recited it as I was supposed to, yet I had no clue of it’s meaning till today.

Doxology is a brief formula for expressing praise or glory to God. Doxologies generally contain two element, an ascription of praise to God (usually referring to in the third person) and an expression of His infinite nature. The term “doxology” (word of glory) itself is not found in the Bible, but both the Old Testament and the New Testament contain many doxological passages. Doxologies are found in many contexts, but one of their chief functions has been as a conclusion to songs, psalms, and prayers, where they possibly served as group responses to solo singing or recitation. (Holman Bible Dictionary)

We are only a few days from Thanksgiving, the day when we are told to give thanks for all that we have. Shouldn’t we truly be thankful for all that God has given us? Shouldn’t our greatest gratitude fall in praise for the gift of grace found in the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ at the Cross for our sins? A doxology represents all that God is; Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient. Everything in life, and life itself are under God’s design, Will, and control. I cannot begin to wrap this into a OneMinuteMinistry, but I pray that you will draw closer to God this Thanksgiving Week and pray for Him to open your heart and mind to the glimpses of his glory that draw your heart to thanksgiving and praise for all that he is to you and all creation.

Bigger than MNF

Bigger than MNF

Mark 6:7-12    Jesus called the Twelve to him, and sent them out in pairs. He gave them authority and power to deal with the evil opposition. 8 He sent them off with these instructions: “Don’t think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. No special appeals for funds. Keep it simple. 9 10 “And no luxury inns. Get a modest place and be content there until you leave. 11 “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.” 12 Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different.(The Message)

‘They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different”; the power of the Gospel in a life transformed by the hearing of it, by the hearts response to it, by the work of Christ in and through it. Jesus was giving his disciples their marching orders; it was time to put feet on their faith and go out into the streets and share the hope that lied within them. The were to go and make disciples. They were to go and spread the hope found in the Gospel that Jesus Christ was bringing to the world that was lost in sin. Our world today is just as far as lost in depravity as the day the disciples went out; we are not in-errantly good, we are at our core evil. In the New King James version of this text, listen to the words of Christ in regard to those that will not hear the Good News. 11 And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!” 12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. Most of us know that those cities were destroyed by God by reigning fire down from heaven on them as condemnation of great sins.

On my only mission trip I spent about 10 minutes with our evangelist with us. He really poured into me this urgency of the Gospel, and it was a key point I took home from our trip. How can we talk about the Panthers win for a week, and not about the Gospel for eternity? How can we talk about the weather, and not who controls it? How can we stand before God and account for all those lost opportunities that we missed, that may have been those that stood before us last opportunity? My prayer is that God would stir your heart with excitement and urgency for the Gospel. My prayer is that you seek to share your faith today with someone new. What if you did not see them tomorrow, and you and they missed that eternal opportunity?

The Last Chapter

The Last Chapter

Ephesians 1:13-14    In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 1 leading up to this passage is packed full of the sovereignty of God with big words like predestination, adoption, dispensation, mystery, and the list could go on. In those passages is wrapped up God’s plan for humanity lost in sin, and the saving power of the Gospel of Salvation by his Son at the cross. There is so much packed into those passages, you must just simply take your time to read them. After those passages, the author Paul writes and prays for the readers to have spiritual wisdom; for God to grant the readers understanding. He knows his writings connected by the “Therefore”(vs.13) are weighty and powerful. This is not a passage in the Bible to be skimmed over; one needs God to open our minds to these truths.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth–in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

The Bible is not a book to be read to get finished and see how it ends. The book of Revelations is a book of the prophecy of the end of time, yet as a believer in Christ, all the world will suffer will not matter if you believe in Him and the rapture of the saints whom are His disciples. Slow down and read the Bible word for word. When you get perplexed, begin to truly study His Word. He will reveal the truths found in it to a heart that is ready for it. The more time you spend daily in this study and prayer, the more He reveals to you. The Holy Spirit that comes to live inside of you found in that promise of verse 13, is who opens the truths of God to you. Without Him, the Bible is just another book you speed through to get to finish and see how it ends. Without Him, you will not like the last chapter.

Pray for your pastor(No retirement plan)

Pray for your pastor(No retirement plan)

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart.

What ministry was Paul talking about? He was talking about the New Testament ministry. God’s New Covenant through the work of Jesus Christ’s shedding of his sinless blood to atone for our sins. The Old Covenant was the Law, or the Ten Commandments, which pointed to our need for a Savior. Jesus came and fulfilled what the the law could not accomplish. Paul was bound by his love for Christ in preaching the Gospel to those that he had once persecuted unto death. Paul knew he was going to suffer for Christ; Acts 9:16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” The Lord had appeared to Ananias in a dream, and sent him to fulfill a vision that He had given Saul (Paul), of healing his eyes, restoring his sight. Paul’s ministry had began with suffering for Christ; he had been struck blind by Christ on that Damascus road.

Intensely personal, I have never been where I find myself today. I am in a place of honor and the greatest humbleness I have ever experienced. The complexity of these two emotions is hard to articulate. My testimony was one of pride, yet now I feel withdrawn from the honor; I do not want to be elevated. Yet the burden on my heart for preaching the Gospel tugs me to climb on the mountaintops and preach. Matthew 10:27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. The intensely spiritual warfare in my mind and those that are close to me is very real; elevated to a place that is painful at times for me and those that endure. Physical pains have increased, this is tangible evidence of this warfare. In all of these Satan seeks to draw my attention away from Christ; in all of these my attention seeks to draw closer to Him; all of these point to the evidence of my NEED for Him.

I humbly write this to any of you that read this: Pray for your pastors. It has taken on an entire new light in my life the pleas I have heard from them through the years. What they battle for your sake, and primarily for the spreading of the Gospel for which they have been entrusted, is a very tough ministry. They share with Christ his sufferings in many ways; yet they hopefully as Paul do not loose heart and preach the only Gospel that saves eternally until their end of days. There should be no retirement plan in ministry.

In all of it

In all of it

2 Corinthians 4:7-8    But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed

Lord you have me here
Where you want me to be;
A new place in life
To pour yourself through me.

My enemy comes at me
In so many different ways;
All sorts of busyness
Taking time from my days.

I want to submerge
In your Word only be;
But that is not your plan
You love to challenge me.

Tasks, tests, & trials
That is how I will grow;
Closer to You in all of them
Out of them You will flow.

As I lay there this morning
Contemplation on my mind;
I come to open my Bible
And this was the verse I find.

It is a verse full of struggle
It is a verse showing the pain;
It is surrounded by the proofs
Of in You we shall we remain.

You are the Light within us
Your Light will shine through;
Your evidences pour from us
In all that we do.

5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

Basic Training

Basic Training

2 Timothy 2:1-4    You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

The apostle Paul’s second letter to Timothy is one of encouragement; one that is likely Paul’s last words to his protege, his son in the faith who had been by his side from Paul’s second missionary trip on. Paul had poured his heart into Timothy, he had stretched the boundaries of what Timothy thought he could do at a young age. Paul knew he had the upbringing and the capability of being a great leader in the church for Christ. Paul knew Timothy would make a good soldier for Christ. Here he reminds him of those struggles that will come to face a soldier for Christ. He is not only telling him to teach, and to delegate, but to remain focused. Soldiers must have a keen eye or focus on the mission at hand; Timothy’s mission was to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all that he encountered. Satan in the spiritual warfare that is the Christian life, brings all that he can to distract one’s eye from the mission at hand. Paul was consistently urging believers to remain focused on the eternal; he wrote in Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Timothy understood these things for he had been with Paul and known first hand the troubles that came as a soldier of Christ.

Today is Veterans Day; the day we salute those who have served our country in the military forces. Many have paid the ultimate price for their service with their lives. One thing is assured; very early in all of their basic training is instilled the necessity of a focused mind. Seeing the goal of the mission at hand; doing whatever it takes to accomplish the mission, no matter what the difficulties or the cost. A well trained soldier is like a machine with only the ability to accomplish the tasks at hand. Is that your mindset when it comes to your faith? Do you waiver when the going gets tough and see the distraction in front of you? Are you able to keep the mindset of a soldier and endure the distraction and press onward and upwards towards the goal? Being a soldier for Christ means you will suffer with him. Listen how Paul points to the promises to those that remain focused: 2 Timothy 2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful–for he cannot deny himself. (ESV) When the going gets tough, remember your basic training; focus on the eternal.

Grace + Faith = 0 Debt Due

Grace + Faith = 0 Debt Due

Romans 5:1-2    Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Justified in it’s simplest meaning would be get out of jail pass; a paid ransom due to a Holy God. Your sin debt has been paid by Jesus Christ. This debt is due to all of mankind due to the imputed sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden. Christ shed blood for you paid your eternal debt. Our faith in that understanding of Grace frees us from the bondage of sin eternally. Think of the Holy Court that God will hold on Judgement Day; when we all, whether we believe in him or not, will stand before him and give an account of our lives. We will either stand guilty and pay for our sins eternally in Hell, or we bow forgiven by our faith in the understanding of the grace and justification of our sins by Christ dying to pay that sin debt due that Judgement Day. Like it or not, believe it or not, we all will meet together on that day and the truth shall be revealed. Did you understand Grace in your life, or did you feel in any way your earned your Salvation? If you feel that you earned it by going to church, being a good person, or any list of good works to earn God’s favor, Christ died in vain, and you will pay eternally for not understanding Grace.

When you come to understand what these scriptures say, the Gospel message that Paul is speaking of here, you gain that peace and hope that the world does not comprehend. The Holy Spirit living inside of you grows your faith and opens the truths of God to you in time cultivated in God’s Word and prayer. Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. The more you seek God the greater your faith, your peace, and the hope that lies within you grows. You begin to have peace in an out of control world, where by the world standards peace is not found. The world teaches self, the Word teaches selflessness. This going against the grain of the world is what gives you the peace that it cannot steal away. Paul speaks of what the world will throw at us , and how it strengthens us when we are strong in our faith. Romans 5:3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. In that growing relationship with your eternal Father, you will possess a hope that others see, that he uses to draw them to himself. They will not understand how you are the way you are, but when they ask, you can share Him with them.

Do the demons know you?

Do the demons know you?

Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”

Is there a Most Wanted poster with your picture on it at the Gates of Hell? Has Satan assigned an army of angels to torment you; is there a spiritual war raging inside your head? Do the demons know you by name, or have they even heard of you? Comfortable Christianity will likely allow you to meet them at a later date. Your life should be so zealous for Christ that it is a constant pain in Satan’s side. You should possess the evidence of Christ, the power of Christ, and the security of Christ that threatens him. That light inside of you should be so bright it dis-spells the kingdom of darkness. It is of a place of honor to see those spiritual wars that rage; it is a place of honor when things in life get rough; it is a place of honor when all that God designs or allows in your life points you to the evidence of your need for him alone. The trials, these temptations, these pains that you endure, all are there to draw you closer. When you draw closer, and the world expects you to fall away in your faith, you become a witness for the power of God in your life. Your life becomes your testimony, and your testimony is to your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul had been baptizing in the name of Christ, and anointing with the Holy Spirit in Ephesus and all of Asia. He had baptized 12 disciples, and spent two years with them in Tyrannus teaching, witnessing, and performing miracles in the name of Christ. The news of Christ, and the power of Christ, began to raise “copycats”. The Jewish so called magicians were claiming the name of Christ in their magic acts. With the seven sons of Sceva, it backfired, and the demon drove out the exorcist. Acts 19:13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. The demon was not threatened by those he knew were not Christians; he was not threatened by those claiming the power, without living the life. The demon called them out, and drove them out, naked and embarrassed.

So much of my life, I thought, and somewhat claimed to be a Christian. I thought that if I believed in Christ, that was all I had to do. I had lived my life in sin, but could somehow justify my sinful lifestyle in my own mind. I could have the pleasure of sin for a season, or even sin repeatedly as long as I repented, and still remain ok on God’s scales of life. Galatians 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. Paul states it very clearly there, we are not to continue in lifestyles of sin when we claim Christ. We are not to rest on Grace, and live in sin. We are to let God work out sanctification in us, and through us, fleeing the sins he reveals to us. We are to live as Paul says, 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
