Open doors

Open doors

Hebrews 10:24-25    And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

What happened? Why don’t you go to church anymore? What hurt did you experience; what hypocrisy steered you away; what victory did Satan have in your life to keep you from being involved in church this long? God has blessed me with the transformation of my Air Conditioning business into a ministry. My truck boldly proclaims my faith, and I am sure it offends as many as it inspires. I never go into peoples home Bible Thumping their heads, but God just seems to open doors to conversations sometimes, and so many times, I hear their stories of why they don’t attend church any longer. It typically involves some painful incident that Satan keeps reminding them of to keep them away. He knows the strength of a believer is much greater in the company of other believers. Sadly now I hear so many times of people trying to do Christianity alone; Christianity is not a solo sport. Many people have come to doing church in front of a TV, listening to smiling preachers that speak of only the good things in life; of a loving God, and if you aren’t blessed, you don’t have enough faith. They only tell people what they want to hear (2Timothy 4:3-4); they don’t preach the coming judgement of God because that will hurt their popularity, ratings, and pocketbooks. They may preach Christ, but they are personally profiting greatly, and I question their hearts in that pursuit.

Church is full of imperfect people; that is why we are in church. We are seeking the “hope that does not disappoint” (Romans 5:5), the support system of those with the same struggles as you are facing. We need the support of each other to do this thing called life. I spoke yesterday of being the “light in the world”(Matthew 5:14) that Christ told us to be. To let our light shine for others; to be His light to help others along their dark paths. Why would you sit at home and keep His light to yourself? Whatever pain you suffered, is a victory for your enemy if you are not moving past it going back to church. You must move past it and claim a victory over Satan when you pass through the doors of church this coming week.

You may not find, the church where God wants you the first time you open the doors. You will know, the church He wants you at the first time you open the doors. God wants you to be encouraged each week in the body of believers. He wants you to come and worship in in song, praise, teaching, prayer, and fellowship. He wants your candle to be so bright that all the world sees it on Monday morning. He wants them to see Christ in you. Don’t let that memory that Satan keeps bringing up, keep you from stomping it under your feet as you pass through the doors this coming week.

I wanna be _______________

I wanna be _______________

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

What do you wanna’ be? Seems like a simple question, but complexities lie in it. Sadly our impulsive answer would probably be “rich”. We want what this parable of the rich young ruler had. We are wired and fed by that desire by all this world teaches. Wealth will fulfill all your hearts desires, fame and fortune come with lots of money. We will become noticed for our success, and seemingly held in high regard, for we now have what others want. We begin to think money will cure all our problems; the success of Lotteries is the evidence of our worship of money. I too would like nothing more that to live debt free; I am a slave to the lender and that burden demands so much of my time…..but if I was rich…..yea, it is real easy to go down that road.

There are many roads to go down in this parable of the rich young ruler. He seeming knew all the answers to the questions Christ asked. You can see him puffing out his chest in pride, until Christ hit him where it hurt. He held, and worshipped his money and possessions much more that he desired to “become perfect”. His had greater love for his wealth that he ever had for his Savior. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (ESV) He didn’t truly wanna’ be perfect, he just wanted to appear perfect. His heart was bound to the wealth he had attained; yet he never understood that God had given it to him; what would he do with what he had been given; where did his heart lie when tested? Can you imagine the life and testimony he could have had if he given all he had to the poor and followed Christ? The outpouring of love would have been used to glorify God to many, but he walked away sad in the realization of the worship of his idol.

What do you wanna be? I wanna be the best disciple I can be for my time remaining here on earth. I want that discipleship to pour into my duties as a husband, father, employer, friend, and all that God places in my circle of influence. I want God to continue this sanctification process in me in the pursuit to make me more like His Son. I know it will be painful at times, but I know that He knows what he is doing. I wanna be a light in a dark world. I wanna be the person that God uses to encourage you to join me on this eternal journey. I wanna be the person who bows at His feet on that day, and hears these words; “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ (Matthew 25:21)

How will they know?

How will they know?

Romans 10:13-15    For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

Paul has been presenting that what was once thought only available to the Jews, is now available to all. The Lord God that all had known the Jews worshipped, had come to give Himself up for those not of Jewish decent too. The saving grace found in Him carried no ruse of exclusivity any longer; all could come to know Him and worship Him for what He freely gave to them. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. This was no private party with a God all throughout the Old Testament that those opposing the Jews had feared; Paul preached a God of love who had came and paid the ultimate price for all to have forgiveness and access to Him. The doors were opened, and all needed to hear; Paul preached the Gospel with urgency.

I love this set of rhetorical questions that Paul presents here; the “how thens”. You say that you believe in Him, but how then did you come to believe? You at some point must have heard of Him, to come to a point of belief in Him. Someone, somewhere, somehow, presented the Good News of Jesus Christ to you. It may have been received with a hardened heart at the time it was presented; it may have fallen on your seemingly deaf ears; it may have nestled in a corner of your soul until God was ready to humble you to remind you of your need of Him. Paul is stressing the importance of spreading the Good News here, to live your life on mission. And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? Have, or more directly, is your life on mission? Do those around you know of Who you place your faith and hope in? How can they share in your joy if they have not heard of Him?

So much over the past couple of weeks of my life has been centered on missions. God has been putting people in my life that have true hearts for missions; for spreading the Gospel to the ends of the earth; with hearts like Paul. I have spent some time with a modern day Paul; he is just encouraging to be in his presence; sold out for Christ and spreading the Good News in a country far away from God. I have friends with true mission hearts such as Paul, I saw and experienced the evidences of it and Him greatly as we gathered to prayerfully send off the next team. The presence of the Holy Spirit was great in that home that evening; He was there, and we were blessed because 15b”How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” My heart is full of joy for those that God has put in my circle to influence me; to encourage me to press on, to feel the love they have for Him and the hearts they have for sharing Him with others. How else will they ever come to know Him?

Do your part

Do your part

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Pastor Jack asked the question of what this scripture meant to us yesterday. This falls in the context of when Christ was speaking to his disciples regarding his second coming and the end of times. They were seeking to know what the signs were for the end of times, and how to be on the lookout for His return. Matthew 24 is Christ’s prophecy of the last days. Early in this prophecy is this scripture above; a prelude to the Great Commission He gives them upon his ascension to heaven after his crucifixion and resurrection. Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Christ was telling them of how it is their ultimate life responsibility to spread the Gospel; and the spreading of the Gospel to all those who will hear must happen before He returns.

Matthew Henry summarized it well, “That which seems chiefly intended here, is, that the end of the world shall be then, and not till then, when the gospel has done its work in the world. The gospel shall be preached, and that work carried on, when you are dead; so that all nations, first or last, shall have either the enjoyment, or the refusal, of the gospel; and then cometh the end, when the kingdom shall be delivered up to God, even the Father; when the mystery of God shall be finished, the mystical body completed, and the nations either converted and saved, or convicted and silenced, by the gospel.” The apostle Paul summarized it well in Romans 10:13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? You are called by Christ, the one who saved you, to preach that message of Salvation to all that will hear. It is your responsibility, unto your debt to Him, to evangelize and spread the Good News found in Him.

Ten years ago the internet was a new fad. A new means of communication that would likely fade. In that short time we now cannot imagine life without it. We now are instantly connected 24 hours a day to all the world. All the world is receiving this technology at an alarming rate. Even missionaries in the far reaches of the earth are carrying this technology into those foreign lands. This can easily be seen as a means for all to hear. You can even look shortly into the future of this technology and begin to understand how “all may see or hear.” In the book of Revelation we are told of the two great prophets that come and preach repentance to all the earth for 1,260 days. When they have finished their testimony, they are killed, and all the world living in sin rejoices at the sight of their bodies. 9 Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. The means for all the world to see and hear lies before you today. God has given us the technology for the Good News to be spread to every nation. Today should be the day you begin to do your part.

Holy Week

Holy Week

Matthew 21:1-5    Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ “

My heart is exceedingly heavy this week. My heart begs for you to grasp the weight of what this holy week represents. We have become so tied up in Spring Breaks, vacations, basketball, and countless other distractions, we miss the gravity of this week that represents all that we claim in Christianity; Satan smiles for he knows our eyes are not on Christ. All of Israel used to stop what they were doing for this week of the Passover celebration; the celebration of God delivering them out of slavery. This passover week has become our celebration of our delivery from the punishment of sin for eternity, yet it seemingly passes into commercialism and we move on with our plans. We have lost all respect for the week that represents more than Christmas; this is the week we celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection; the reason He came to earth as a man on Christmas morning; the fulfilling of His purpose to justify you before God.

Christ rode into Jerusalem on a colt to fulfill the prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah. These prophecies were known to the Jews, and therefore it was recognized that he was their Messiah riding into their town. Everything Christ did was to fulfill prophecy throughout the Bible, and all that he has spoken regarding prophecy to come will be fulfilled also. Christ points to His omniscience in knowing where the colt was, and the reply of its owner. He cares for the beasts just as he cares for you. Matthew10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Christ was riding into Jerusalem in triumph, for he knew his fathers will for him to overcome Satan’s power of sin for eternity. This is his only triumphal entry in his life, and it is when he is preparing for his death.

An eternal king rode into an earthly kingdom, to present a holy sacrifice to pay for sin for those that hated him. He would allow himself to be mocked, beaten, spat upon, and sacrificed by those he loved so much to die for. He was their creator, sustainer, and justifier all in one person. He was fully God and fully man, and He now has arisen and sits at the right hand of God on the throne. He came, He died, He arose, He ascended, He is coming back. This week should stir your soul; it should move you to a thanksgiving and a repentant heart, a heart that grasps the understanding of this week 2000 years ago. Matthew 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”

It is clear now

It is clear now

1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Yesterday I returned to my old dirt bike racing days; just for a time, to let both my boys try their first race. It was a great family day together, and they had a great time. I decided to saddle up too, and try to at least finish the race. Racing is hard to describe to those don’t get it, but it is something that is always in your blood. For me it went as far as turning into an idol, and became a huge turning point in my testimony of giving my life to Christ. It wasn’t five miles into the race  and I had those same feelings again; it was time to give it up, this was not for me any longer; physically, mentally, and even spiritually, I knew I was done. It was most likely my last race. God has even taken away my shoulder muscle to try and make it much more clear for me to understand; but in my mind that pride still tries to overcome obstacles He lays before me.

Paul was steep in religion; he was a highly educated man; he had a personal encounter with the risen Christ; at some point he visited heaven; but God had allowed Satan to give him a thorn in the flesh. 2 Corinthians 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Paul most likely could have preached a sermon so elevated many would have come to repentance from the power of his teachings. He could have elevated himself through his wisdom to a level like none other once he came to truly know Christ that he formerly persecuted. He had every thing that every preacher wanted in education and experience. This was the stuff that great pastors are made of, until pride creeps in and destroys their ministry. I do believe God knew that, and allowed Satan to torment Paul, which kept Paul humble. God used Satan against himself in the ministry He laid on Paul’s heart. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

I am far from an educated man. I graduated High School because the teachers told me if I would at least show up, they would pass me, and I did, barely. I have never been a reader, or a book learner; I always learned by example, and trial and error. I have found myself at this stage in my life back in school, in seminary no doubt, enrolled in a two year program at Liberty. I am a living example of what God can do in anyone’s life who has a heart for Him. 1 Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. I am nothing but an ol’ country boy with a heart for Christ. I love spending daily time with Christ and writing what he lays on my heart. You can have all that He has planned for your life too once you follow the lifestyle principle found in Matthew 6:33. That is a great place for you to start today in transforming your life to as a disciple of Christ; today, for you are not guaranteed tomorrow.

Thank you for 500

Thank you for 500

Matthew 6:33 Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

Today is my 500th OneMinuteMinistry devotional. Today is different, it is more of a thank you letter than a devotional. I was headed up I-77 one day when God laid this ministries name on my heart. I shared it with a friend, and God used him to prod me on to start writing. When I searched the domain name it came back available in all domains: .com, .org, .txt. .me, and so on. A direct confirmation from God to me for what he had laid on my heart. It started with a handful of you in a news media fast for 30 days , for a January resolution in 2012. It grew into the blog/website, and an email list, that I now personally send it out to about 1,100 people every morning. I have received news that it has gotten into a very large ministries distribution recently by an incredible God orchestrated event. I stand amazed consistently at how God works.

Many of you ask how I do it; why I do it; when I do it. The answers are all found in Matthew 6:33 above. I get up very early every morning and spend time with God. I reflect on what he has shown me in my life in relation to what he shows me in His Word. I am humbled by how He has revealed Himself to me every morning. You can have it all to; there is nothing special about me. The bottom line of my ministry is to point you to spending daily time with God. We all have come to that point of wanting more, yet we never seek Him with a genuine heart. We flippantly read the Bible or pray, and feel good about going to church for an hour one day. I was that guy for most of my life, buried in the false security of religion, and would have died in it if it were not for Christ stirring my soul. All the answers you desire for your life are found once you seek God with all your heart every day. Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. It will not be easy; He never promises us that; but with it will come eternal security and peace that the world cannot provide. You will gain an understanding that all the trials of life that you face are only temporary. They all can draw you closer to God, and they all will remind you of the eternal paradise that awaits you as a child of His.

Christ last words to us are known as the Great Commission. Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Nowhere in the Bible does he tell us to say a prayer, sign a card, and continue on as we were before. There should be a change in your life, a call to action in your life, you are told by Christ to make disciples. You are to share the hope that you have in Him. You are called to give the bad news of sin, followed by the Good News of Salvation in faith in Christ alone. You are to spend your life in pursuit of Him with all your heart, mind, body, and strength. This brings about a state of abiding; a state of being in Christ. This is the goal of the Father, to make you like his Son, to make you a light in a dark world. What in your life could possibly be holding you back from dedicating your life to the One who created it, sustains it, and restored it for eternity with Him?

Heartfelt Faith

Heartfelt Faith

Hebrews 11:5-6    By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

This morning in prayer I seemed to go down a road of reflection on my life the past six or seven years. I remembered God stirring my heart, and that led to a desire to start reading my Bible every day. I remember God really convicting me of sin. I remember God really asking me for steps of faith. I remember my life changing so much in so many ways from just answering that tug on my heart to start reading my Bible every day. That is the root of my evangelism, my ministry, my calling from God. To share a life changed with you; to share Salvation through Christ with you; to share the need for time with Him every day with you. All of the troubles and questions you face are found in Christ, and a heart that truly desires to serve Him. You do not have to go to seminary to become a disciple for Christ.

Hebrews 11 is packed with the stories of the people who had great faith in the Bible. The stories many of us know; of those that stepped out into the unknown on the hope they would find God there. Every story, every time, never failing, God was there to provide for them. Enoch had such a heart for God that he did not even taste death’s sting; God took him alive into heaven. Enoch left a powerful testimony of a life dedicated to God. For 365 years he pursued God and the things of God with so much heart that God whisked him away into heaven, leaving Enoch an eternal testimony of a heart for God; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Enoch could not see that eternal testimony that God had for him. He only had a heart for God and desired to please God for all his life. God had bigger plans for him.

Are you comfortable in your faith? Are you feeling good about your relationship with Christ? If you are not feeling challenged by Christ in acts of faith, you may need to examine your heart for Him. He detests the lukewarm Christian, the comfortable, the content. Revelation 3:15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. We have so watered down the Gospel in today’s church that many who believe they are saved, are not. You cannot say a prayer, sign a card, and live your life for this world for the remainder of it and expect an eternal paradise. The conviction of sin that sets in upon true salvation brings a desire to serve the One who delivered it. That heart is moved into service; that heart is moved into acts of obedience; that heart is a heart that pleases God.

Preparing Sinners and Soul Winners

Preparing Sinners and Soul Winners

Acts 10:17-21   Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate. 18 And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there. 19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you. 20 Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.” 21 Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?”

My best friend has been called to pastor a struggling church in the inner city of downtown Charlotte. I have been at his side serving. and loving seeing God move and work in the early stages of reaching the community for Christ. I am seeing God bring in people from the community that have a heart and a zeal for God; they are surely to be used by God to reach their neighbors. There are plans of how to do community outreach events in the works; there is the front door ministries; care ministries; the pastor is already beginning the shepherding of his flock; there are many aspects of spreading the Gospel, of seeking to see the church grow. By God’s grace in my current schoolwork I am in the book of Acts, and seeing the plans God had for growing the early church.

God was preparing Peter for the unthinkable of his peers as a Jew. God was preparing Peter to deliver the Gospel to the Gentiles. Jews were not even supposed to hang out with non-Jews, much less break bread to sit and eat with them. God had given Peter a vision of breaking the old Jewish law and eating the unclean. 28 Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” At the same time God had given a Roman soldier Cornelius a vision of seeking out Simon Peter. Cornelius was 2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. Cornelius feared God, but was not yet saved. God was preparing the sinner and soul winner.

God is always at work behind the scenes. He is preparing the hearts of the lost. He is seeking them and hopefully they are responding to His call on their lives. He is working in the lives of the believers. He may be pointing out sin in their lives; he is showing them truths in his Word and prayer;  he is preparing them for his work through them. The Holy Spirit fell upon Cornelius and his entire household of faith that day. Christ was brought out into the Gentile world for 34b “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.” The Good News is available for all to have, and for all to share in what they possess. God has most likely prepared that persons heart that stands before you today; to hear the Good News which you possess.

Out – Over – Move on

Out – Over – Move on

Acts 15:37-39   Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. 39 Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus;

There had become a huge conflict in the early Christian church regarding the circumcision of the new Gentile believers. A meeting had been called in Jerusalem with all the apostles and the Jewish counsel. They had agreed somewhat that circumcision was not a requirement of the faith; 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Paul and Barnabas were to set off to deliver the news and encourage the early churches. An argument over John Mark who had earlier deserted them caused Paul and Barnabas to go their separate ways. The ministry doubled, and Paul was even reconciled to John Mark later in his life (2 Timothy 4:11).

If you stay in church long enough, you will have conflict in church. It is going to happen, it is going to divide, it can weaken testimonies and ministries. It can be a test of your faith; it can be a test of where your heart lies. If you take your eyes off the Person, you will surely be disappointed in where you place your hope. Satan loves dissension; Satan smiled at the argument of Paul and Barnabas; God doubled the ground covered by separating the two great men of faith. Barnabas headed to Cyprus; Paul headed to Syria, and then on to Cilicia. God was at work in all those men and He had a plan that included separating them to grow their ministries. Barnabas had chosen not to take their argument to the Jewish counsel, but to keep his eyes on his ministry and faithfully serve the Lord.

We are told throughout the Bible that when we fight we must forgive and make up. What if we are only forgiven the amount we are able to forgive? The Bible speaks directly to how we view one another, and that view may be held in how we forgive. Matthew 7:1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. We are told not to even go to sleep with without resolving conflict; get it out, get it over, move on. Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. Putting conflict in the past is part of moving on with the ministry God has placed on your heart. God may be doubling the ground covered as a result; just like the days of Paul and Barnabas.
