Threefold Cord of Obedience

Threefold Cord of Obedience

Romans 5:1-5    Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Do you understand that living your life as a Christian, in it’s simplest form, is living a life of obedience? Living a life in honor to the One who gave you eternal life? Obeying the things He places on your heart? It is not following a set of rules and regulations; obeying a lawbook becomes legalism, and legalism moves to a point that you feel you obtain salvation on your ability to follow the laws on your own merit. A truly transformed heart is one that is led to obey out of the love that it has for the One who came to live there. There is an eternal difference is the heart that obeys out of duty, rather than the heart that obeys out of love. A heart of duty becomes a hard heart that stiffens at those calls of obedience; it has the “okay, if I must” attitude towards the call. The loving heart is humbled and in awe of the tugs the Spirit leads them to; it is honored to express it’s love in obedience to those calls.

A week ago I responded to one of those such calls. I knew I must obey, but I did not move in that duty of obedience, I moved in the awe of it. God lays these big things before us, all to draw us closer to Him thru our obedience. Satan creeps in the thoughts and shadows of it, and begins his work. These are the tribulations that Paul speaks of; Satan means them for evil, God means them for good. I am in the midst of these tribulations; I expected these tribulations, and I prayed and knew that God could be glorified through them. James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Over and over again you will hear testimony of how God did his greatest work in a believers life when they faced their greatest trials of life. These trials may not be the life changers, but the seemingly endless barrage of enemy fire that comes daily. In all of them, look to God for strength in them.

A friend of mine told me the other day of how the devil was riding his back. In the next sentence he said of how Satan must still not realize that Christ has risen. He is risen indeed; Satan and sin were eternally defeated at the cross; Paul speaks above of how you stand justified before a holy God that will declare eternal judgement one day. But as a child of His, you can rest in the faith, hope, and peace as Paul speaks of. The trials of life are the cords that twist you tighter to Him. That hope cannot be taken away by the world once you grasp the certainty of it. Those tugs of obedience, the loving heart that responds, the twists of the tribulations, all tighten and strengthen your cord of life found in Him.

Early Hope

Early Hope

Psalm 63:1 A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.

The day has not yet dawned,
I arise early to seek You;
I move from slumber to your presence
You are here to meet me too.

The expectant heart tugs
Seeking my Lord every day;
In prayer and His Word
To find strength and the way.

The world teaches self
No time for Him only me;
He teaches selflessness
As disciples lives should be.

Where is your focus
What are your first thoughts?
The tasks for the day
Or the One whom you were bought?

You say you want change
From Him you want more;
A heart daily seeking Him
Finds what is in store.

Daily prayer and his Word
Should be priorities in your day;
To prepare and align your heart
Through them He shows the way.

Alone you will fail
Together you will succeed;
The Book of Life, God’s spoken words
Will meet your daily need.

My life forever changed
When I opened His book
Starting my every day in there
Eternal hope is what I took.

Where does your heart lie?

Where does your heart lie?

John 15:5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

God is stirring my soul……I know not yet what his plans are for me, but yet I feel him at work in me. My yearning is to bring you along side me, to walk together in this journey of faith. Our world is running headlong away form God and I want you to turn with me and run to God. I am so tired of what I see around me; I am so tired of my own daily failures in so many areas. I prayed to God this morning for the closeness I have felt at times with Him; those days usually in Fasts that I know I am walking in the Spirit, abiding in Him. A time when my spiritual awareness is heightened, when my focus is on God, and him alone. Oh, how this world and the ruler of it succeed in their abilities to take our eyes off God. There are countless ways that seemingly take our eyes off Him, many ways may be seemingly good, yet move the focus towards ourselves and not our Savior.

I seemingly seem to be having trouble focusing; the elevated stresses and strains of life are plaguing my memory. My hearts desire is to draw closer to my Savior; to walk in his Spirit abiding in Him each day. To be in the center of His Will for my life, and to use my life to draw glory to Him. To be a better father, husband, and leader of my family. To point them to the One who can offer them what I cannot. To point others to what I have found in my soul from the daily time in His Word. To show others that the only change they will ever find in their lives is found in Christ, and found in seeking Him every single day. More than a one time prayer, but a heart that is after God. A heart that lives as in Matthew 6:33 Seek Ye first, the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. All those things that you say that you want from God, what are you doing to find the answers to them? Are you spending daily time with Him in prayer and His Word? Are you living for the world 6.5 days a week and expecting all from Him for a small time on Sunday?

What does the word abide mean to you? Abide is a state of being; being in Christ. His Spirit comes to live in you as a result of your repentant heart and Salvation. When He comes to dwell there, do you spend your time repressing the things that He is showing you? Do you deny those sins that He is revealing to you? Do you let Him do his work inside you, and change you from the inside out as only He can? Testimonies to the power of Christ are born in lives transformed. Rescued and delivered from sin; eternally forgiven, and eternally rewarded for those that truly seek Him. We are called to live our lives as disciples; to deny ourselves and live an obedient heart for His Will for our lives for each day. An abiding heart is an obedient heart; and each day brings a test of obedience; of where your heart lies.

Priceless treasure

Priceless treasure

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

I have always been very open about my struggles with memory. Some mornings I use a website to search for a word on my heart. That search many mornings leads to quality time in my favorite Bible. Some mornings I simply park, and read, and study in it. My Bible is full of highlighted passages, notes, and my own words that God has shown me while spending time there. I have had this Bible for over five years, and there is nothing that can compare to the special place it holds in my heart. I left it at church one time, and almost had a panic attack fearing I had lost it forever. Even in my struggles with my memory, it just always seems that I can find what I need when I need it most there. It is truly like there is a direct connection with God in this Book, because there is; He lives between those pages and He knows my love for him and his word. This particular Bible is beyond special to me, it is a part of me.

John is speaking to the Holy Spirit that dwells in us; that Spirit gives us discernment to spiritual things. John was speaking of the anti-christ and the deceivers that are working in the world. There are many that preach a false gospels today in many varieties. Today they seem to be luring people away with the promises of an easy and blessed life, but not preaching the power of the convictions of sin. John is urging you to use the discernment that is given you to see this as a lie; to practice the truths that are found in His Word; to steer away from false teachers; to abide in the Spirit and dwell in His presence in His Word and truth. John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever– 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Christ was speaking to the disciples before he was to suffer for all of mankind at the Cross. He told them of the coming blessing of the Holy Spirit that will be given to all believers in Him. That is Christ’s Sprit that comes to live inside you; he comes to bless you beyond description for your time here. He comes to open up His Word to you like never before. He will take your Bible and communicate to your mind through your heart. You will begin to see Him as never before and be drawn back into His Word daily for another word from Him. You will be drawn to share with others what He has shown you. You will begin to look back at your own Bible and all the notes and highlights in it where He has spoken to you. It will become a priceless treasure to you too.

Do you believe?

Do you believe?

John 12:44-47    Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

I heard a really good sermon yesterday on Christ’s deity; of how manifested as God in the flesh. Of how He is a part of the Holy Trinity; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We simply cannot wrap our minds around this concept, but yet do we believe this concept? Is not faith’s foundation in believing what we cannot see, or even possibly understand? Is the pride of our lives so great, that if we cannot explain it, we will not believe it? That is a deadly pride, the root of all sin, the basis on which there is a separation of heaven and hell. You cannot profess to believe in Christ and not understand that he walked this earth that He created in human form. He humbled himself and came to earth to pay your debt that you could not afford. He died for you to live eternally, with Him, in paradise.

Christ was entering into Jerusalem in this passage; he was coming into town with the knowledge he as going to die the most excruciating death imaginable. He was coming into town to the praise and worship of men; those same men that would soon turn on him and crucify him in very short time. He boldly claims his deity; he understands what this means to those that do not believe. But he also tells them they must believe to be saved; for He will return and judge the world when He comes the second time. John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 12:48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. Are you prepared to kneel before God on that day of judgement? Are you living your life now in preparation for that day? Your sins, past, present, and future can be forgiven by the One who came to save the world; you must believe and grasp that understanding of Him as your Lord and your God.

I guess I don’t get it how someone doesn’t believe. I, even at my worst and greatest sin stages of my life believed in Christ. I chose to run from God and pursue the temporal pleasures of sin, denying the eternal price I would pay for those decisions. I blatantly lived my life against all that I knew to be true. I was captured by the enemy, deep behind enemy lines. How could I say that I believed, and continue to live in sin? I didn’t really believe I guess. For if I had understood what awaited me in hell as a result of my life, I would have stopped and pled for it immediately. Please understand you are not guaranteed tomorrow, but you are guaranteed forgiveness today. It is never to late……until it is.

It’s hard sometimes

It’s hard sometimes

1 Peter 5:8 -9  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

This summer has seemed to bring much more stress and problems than usual. Everything that can go wrong has; odd problems, problems rarely seen, things that just don’t happen, seem to happen anyhow. I have gotten to the breaking point over and over again, ready to lash out at the world and just scream. The flesh inside of me screams “why me?” I have even found myself curse; which by God’s hand he delivered me from that sin early in the sanctification process of my life. By God’s mercy and grace, I have not snapped yet; only through his provision and my hearts desire to stay abiding as his disciple have I not. It has been very hard…….

I read this passage above in my daily devotional this morning. I do understand and see much of my life through a spiritual lens; a lens of discernment from which many of my problems arise. My adversary knows my heart for God and his goal is to keep my heart from God; to cause me to lash out at God; to return to my old sinful self that he was proud of. When you turn your life over to Christ, you do not get to press the “Easy Button”. Satan has a real reason to pursue you with increased diligence, for you have “switched sides”. It is a lie from hell being preached in the world today of a life of ease as a Christian. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that. We are taught to live for eternity.

2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. All that our outward man, that is all that we battle in the flesh, is the result of sin. Satan is in control of this world; the outward world, the one that is flesh and perishing. God has him on a leash, he can only go as far as God allows, but all his work is perishing. Only those that are in Christ are living for the world to come; a world perfect without Satan & sin, with renewed heavenly bodies, a world with Christ alone in his kingdom. Keeping our eyes on the eternal goal gives us the strength to understand all these problems are from a defeated enemy. Know that you are not alone in your struggles, but seek the brotherhood of faith to assist you in them.

Get back up

Get back up

Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Satan loves to find that which troubles us and press us there. He works his evil by continuing to strike us where is hurts. I could go down three or four roads where I am taking his blows right now. All of them hurt, and he seeks to take my eyes off Christ and concentrate on the pain. He wants me to lash out at God with the “why me”; or the anger that comes in it. He wants me to rebel against God and all that He has planned for me. Satan wants me to concentrate on the temporal situations, and not the eternal solution. God is allowing these trials to show me his work in them. I am so tired; mentally and physically in so many ways. I feel like the prize fighter who is entering the 12th round, battered and bruised but determined to win the fight.

I understand how lucky I am in so many ways compared to most. I know the blessings I have outweigh those that have not so much. I know that my troubles seem small to so many that face real struggles. I know that Satan is just as good at striking you as he is me. Paul was one who suffered immeasurably for Christ; yet through all of it he gave us most of the New Testament. When Ananias was called by God to go see Paul, the Lord told him the plans he had for Paul. Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” Sometimes when I look at my life before Christ, I feel that I too should have to suffer for His name.

So much I read talks about suffering for Christ. Are you willing to suffer for Him? Are you wanting the life of ease and the blessings that all these false prophets preach today? Are you truly swept away by their feel good gospel that never talks of suffering? Do you believe that Christ paid the ultimate price for you to have everything you wanted on this temporal earth that Satan rules? Don’t you think that He is more concerned with your eternal destiny, than at best a 100 years here? Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me.

T.G.I.F. > Today God Is First

T.G.I.F. > Today God Is First

Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made ; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

T: Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made ; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

My every morning prayer has one certain repetition: Thank you Lord for today. He grants me the breath for the day, and allows or designs all that will be in the day. He is the creator and sustainer of all of life to the smallest detail. He has granted me breath for another day to serve a purpose for that day. I seek to be in the center of his Will for each day.

G: Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

He is the creator, sustainer, judge, jury, and ruler of all. He will return to judge all of our lives in a holy court for how we have lived our lives according to his good Word. We must give account for all our thoughts, deeds, spoken and unspoken words. We must give account of how we treated the sacrifice He made for us at Calvary. Did we live the life of a disciple?

I: Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment.

What is He really to you? Where does your daily life reflect your relationship with your Lord and Savior? Do those around you know that your are a Christian? Do they want to be a Christian because of you? If you have Christ at the center of your life because of the love you feel for him, you will naturally be an outpouring of his Spirit that lives inside of you. The love that you have will be known to all that come in contact with you.

F: Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Start your day out with God and all your day will be better. A heart for God seeks him early in the day, before the pressures of the day, try to take your eyes off Him. A heart for God spends time in his Word and prayer, seeking to abide with him for the day. A heart for God comes to the understanding that all the trials of life can draw you closer to Him, not take you away from Him as Satan desires to do. Preparing your day with God is the key to all you desire. Your life will not change until you start your day with God. In that effort is found all that you desire each and every day. It starts with today.

Even kings take notice

Even kings take notice

Genesis 26:3-5    Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

Someone close to me pointed me to Genesis last night, primarily the story of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Isaac had followed in his fathers footsteps in so many ways. He had fled the land when there was famine; he had feared for his life like Abraham had with Sarah and lied about it; but just like Abraham he had sought God in all of it. He spent his life listening to God and working all his life for God. He repeatedly dug wells to provide water, and avoided confrontations over the wells; he simply moved to anther until he felt God tell him all was ok, and this one was his. He continually sought God’s direction, and listened and obeyed when God spoke. His life drew the attention of those that noticed the anointing he had, and even pagan kings let him pass freely in fear of Isaac’s God.

God is not slack on his promises. God told Abraham he would bless him, and He reminded Isaac of that covenant with his father. Isaac would seek to remain in the center of God’s will in all that he did. He would fail at times, but his heart was after God and the things of God, and he was a testimony to those he came in contact with. How hard do you try to live your life for God? How much time do you invest in seeking God in prayer and his Word? There is a direct relation to that time and the anointing that you have in your life. How will you hear the voice of God; bigger question is how will you discern it is the voice of God? Only a heart for God? 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Abimelech, the pagan king who told Isaac to flee his land after Isaac lied to him, was so impacted by Isaac that he wanted peace with him. He sought Isaac out in another land to form an oath of peace. Genesis 26:28 But they said, “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.’ “ You can be just as Isaac; you can become a disciple of Christ, with the anointing of Christ for all to see in this world far from God. He can use you to attest to the power He has, and use you to reach others with your life. All you must do is to seek God with all your heart, mind, body, and soul; listen and obey Him when he speaks to you, and others will take notice of your love of your Lord just as the pagan king saw in Isaac.

Soldier disciples

Soldier disciples

John 15:8-17    By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another. 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.

It’s Memorial Day, the day when we solemnly remember those who have paid the ultimate price, sacrificing their lives for ours. Those who have died fighting for our freedom, paying the ultimate price for those who may not even appreciate the price that they have paid. We take time to remember those who were the good soldiers; fighting for a cause they believed in to the point of death. Can you see the similarity in what Christ has done for you? Can you see that He paid the ultimate price to pay for your freedom from the eternal pain of sin? The One who created you, died to save you, to give his life for yours; I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (John 10:10b).

The apostle Paul in his final letter to Timothy, uses the analogy of a soldier; Timothy must understand that the road as a disciple of Christ will be as a soldier for Christ. 2 Timothy 2:3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. I am reading an incredibly powerful book, The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, that goes into detail the call of discipleship that is placed by Christ on those he calls. Of the conscious act of making that commitment to follow His call. To place that effort in the act of obedience to what He lays on our heart. In this act of free will, is the heart of a disciple; a heart that desires to draw nearer to Christ in these acts of immediate obedience to what He calls us to do. This intimacy is found, cultivated, and continually sought in the life of a soldier, a disciple of Christ’s.

Do you claim the promises of Christ, but yet fail to live for Him? Do you in your mind see yourself in heaven since you signed a paper, or prayed a prayer? Do you have any evidences in your heart that something changed; is there evidences in your external of the internal change? Will you obey or delay that call He placed on you? Will you become a disciple of His even if it means to the point of death; dying to yourself and the false needs wrapped up in the ideal of sin from your enemy? Your enemy lurks behind your front lines placing doubt and false desire. A good soldier for Christ only seeks to please the One who enlisted him, who called him out to be a soldier for the heavenly army. Place your life’s focus, trust, and obedience in the commander of the heavenly army that will have assured victory over Satan and sin in the end; the beginning of eternal paradise for His soldiers.
