What?????????

What?????????

Proverbs 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him.

I spent about five years in the car business just out of high school, and in sales we were taught to control the conversation. If a customer was going down a road you didn’t want to go down, interrupt and take it where you wanted it to go. You could also sometimes build rapport with the customer if you knew what you thought they were talking about, or going to say. Let’s just say I believe the success rate was in the lower percentile. It was simply rude and a manipulative sales technique that haunted me for many years. Being a poor listener and interrupting continued well past the car-biz. Thankfully as a part of sanctification the Lord is teaching me to shut up and listen more.

The Message translation of this scripture simplifies it even more; 13 Answering before listening is both stupid and rude. So many times we think we know what people are going to say, so we finish their sentences, or maybe even answer before they even ask. If we were not so consumed with ourselves we would see the disgust in their facial expressions at our rudeness. We are saying to them, what we have to say is more important. Solomon also wrote about the prideful sinner who wouldn’t listen; Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice. (NIV) There are countless errors in life, that have led us astray in life, simply from not listening to advice, or someone who God had placed before us. God may have placed his servant before us for exactly what we needed to hear, but we interrupted them, and never heard the word from God.

This is even a trait that I believe is rooted in our sin-state from birth, rooted deep in sin and pride that came from the fall of man. I believe pride is the root of all sin, traceable from when Satan was cast from heaven for wanting to be like God. We see it in our children as they grow up; constantly reminding them to be not interrupt, or to shut-up and listen for lack of a better word. This is a character-trait that God will work on for you if you will pursue him like Solomon did. God granted Solomon to be the wisest man who ever lived. Don’t you think it is good advice to shut up and listen to the Holy Spirit inspired words that he wrote?

I missed You!

I missed You!

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

This morning I get to sit back down in my seat here with God. I get to see the painting he prepared for me out the window. The past four days are a blur of sickness, out of town working long, hard days, and sleeping in because my body is drained. I have not spent four days with God and I am having trouble resisting the wiles of the devil. Satan seizes opportunities like this; a physically weakened state coupled with a weakened spiritual state. He comes at you in the arena of the mind and attacks you where he knows you struggle and many times fail. He will fill your head full of thoughts that if you had spent time in the Word, you would have been stronger for the fight. Your shield of faith resists his flaming darts; it gains strength from time in the Word, and the Bible is the only offensive weapon you have. This is the life of anyone that is a Christian; I am no different from you; Satan attacks you when you are down or even just not protecting yourself daily by spending time with God.
My testimony and my heart lies in more than just the gospel. If there is one other thing I can share with anyone outside of the saving news of faith in Jesus Christ, it is spending time in God’s Word every, single, day. I grew up in religion, I ran from God for twenty years, and when he rescued me I began to read my Bible every day. It was in that conscious effort and heart for God that He changed my life, and he will do the exact same for you. You cannot spend time in the Bible every day and remain the same person. He will accomplish what he desires in your life, because your desires will become the same as his. He will see your heart for him and reward you with a relationship with him that you cannot imagine doing life without. It will become all that matters to you; what you want to discuss with others; why you have a heart for God. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

If I could only say one thing to you, a parting sentence if we met on the street or something, it would be: “Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for the only way to heaven and seek him every day in prayer and his Word.” He will accomplish all both of you desire for your life and you will be rewarded for an eternity.

The Incarnation

Last year I did a study for my first Christmas sermon on the Incarnation. This study ended up changing the way I viewed Christmas when the Holy Spirit opened up the scriptures to me, giving me a glimpse of understanding that God lied in that manger and in Mary’s arms. I am preaching today at Hoskins, and sharing this message again next week at Lakehaven. My prayer is that He gives you the same glimpse of the example of humility that He gave me.

Self-check

Self-check

2 Corinthians 13:5-6 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you are disqualified. 6 But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified.

There is so much to discuss in this chapter of this epistle. Paul is addressing them again, and being pretty stern about it. He has called out there sins, and in the closing of this second epistle he is really saying, “You don’t want me to come down there in person.” In chapter 13 he is telling them to examine themselves; ask themselves the same questions that are directing at Paul. My favorite Bible commentary says Paul wanted them to live by the same standards they asked of him; where they living out the faith they proclaimed? That is a question we must continue to ask of ourselves today, honestly one that is needed daily, and even down deeper than that. This world tugs at our every fiber wanting us to live in the flesh, and not in the spirit. I am guilty just as you, every day I fail, every day is an opportunity for repentance in the flesh coming out of me in more than one circumstance each day.

How do we self-evaluate? All sorts of self-help books are out there with countless guidelines to give you twelve-step programs to evaluate and improve your image and self-worth. All the products of mankind to fix what only the Bible can. Only the Bible is called the Living Word, because only the Bible has the power of God through his Holy Spirit answering those questions that you ask. 1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. So many times we put down the Bible because we don’t like the way it makes us feel. The Holy Spirit is poking on the sin you don’t want to let go, maybe denied sin, maybe hidden sin, maybe sin you felt justified in. How will you ever get close to God holding whatever sin the Spirit shows you above your relationship with Him? How will you kneel before Him on Judgement Day and give an excuse of what he is going to tell you he clearly told you in his Word? Romans 14:11 For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.”

Living a good life, going to church, doing good deeds, and any list of self-accomplishments will never do the work in your life with eternal meaning that will substitute time spent in the Bible. There is nothing next to Salvation more eternally important that spending daily time in the Bible. All of your life flows and is reflected from your time spent there. Paul’s self-reflection is a working part of God’s sanctification through you in it. Pray, open it, and meditate on it daily.

Lighter Note: I couldn’t help but laugh as I thought of the old Stuart Smalley clip from SNL. It truly sums up the corniness of all self-help media.

OH no! They’re back early!

OH no! They’re back early!

Luke 12:48b For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

There is so much context in this final part of a passage where Christ was speaking to his disciples in a couple parables about responsibilities. He had used the context of those that were left in charge, those that responsibility had been placed on there shoulders when the master was away. Did it become a time of “mice will play while the cats away?” I think back of my testimony like many of yours in our youth, when we had a party when our parents were gone. Jesus is speaking of our preparedness for their return. Peter had asked Jesus about the parable, and Jesus had spoke of the punishment that came to those who had forsaken their responsibilities left them.

This second part of verse 48 can also stand alone out of the context of the passage; it reads clearly of the responsibility we have laid on us in any situation in life, or even more directly our responsibility as a Christian. Do you claim Christ and then return to sin? Do you claim Christ and then never pray or read your Bible? Do you not seek to become a disciple and live for him as He commanded us with his parting words as he ascended into heaven? Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Living your life for Jesus, sharing Jesus with those you meet, the pursuit of righteousness is not an option as a Christian; all of these are responsibilities as a Christian.

There is always that dread when you are failing in your responsibility that the one who gave you will return before you can right your ways. Do you know that is where this answer above came from? Luke 12:40 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Begin to live your life for Jesus today as if he might return today. Can you imagine how great it would be if his return found you deeply in kingdom work? Luke 12:37 Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. Don’t think about how bad it would be for him to find you failing in your responsibility as a Christian; think about what you can do today to prepare for his return. Our goal in our lives as a Christian is found in another simple statement; Matthew 25:23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

Pebbles and Ripples

Pebbles and Ripples

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

There is so much in this passage, so much more that speaks to the context of the passage when Moses spent time with God. Moses came down off the mountain and his face shined so bright from being in God’s presence, that he covered it to keep from scaring the children. Did they notice; did they even notice the fading away? There is much to discuss there, but let’s look past that at what is in the passage above. The veil is taken away; the glory of God is revealed. When you come to know and accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord, there is freedom found in your new life. Liberty is that freedom that Paul is describing here. Eternal freedom from the condemnation that the Old Covenant with Moses brought. Faith in Jesus Christ gives you the keys to heaven.

Also in this passage is God’s goal for your life; to transform you into the image of his Son. This is a lifelong process called sanctification, and a process that God uses the changes in your life to draw others to him. You are like the first ripple in a pool, that keeps rolling out, but that ripple started when someone shared the gospel with you. They were the pebble that he dropped into your pool. The power of the gospel is so intertwined with sanctification. The closer you draw to God through his Word and prayer, the more your reflect Christ, the more you share Christ. It begins with the gospel and it continues with sanctification.

You will never understand God’s Word, the Bible, until you humble yourself and allow Christ to become your Lord and Savior. He then gives you the promise of the Holy Spirit, God himself, to live inside of you. It is never through diligent study, never through any teacher or preacher, but only time and every time is the truth of God’s Word revealed to you every time by the Spirit. 1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. God may use his saints to open his truths to you, but you have been blessed by the Holy Spirit with that revelation. After God drops the pebble of Christ in your pool, let him do the daily work of sanctification in you to push his ripples farther and farther out into the sea.

What does love do?

What does love do?

Compilation from The Message Translation of 1 Corinthians 13

LOVE DOESN’T

Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have

Love doesn’t strut, doesn’t have a swelled head

Doesn’t force itself on others

Isn’t always “me first”

Doesn’t fly off the handle

Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others

Doesn’t revel when others grovel.

LOVE DOES:

Love never gives up

Love cares more for others than for self

Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth

Puts up with anything

Trusts God always

Always looks for the best

Never looks back, but keeps going to the end

Love never dies.

Trying to be……

Trying to be……

1 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

If there is one thing I am sure of after just over a year as a lay pastor, Satan attacks where you preach. This test has been almost a weekly occurrence, and that makes tackling the difficult subjects increasingly tough. Ministry is very lonely in itself, and Satan uses that as a prop to open the door to depression since the doorframe of depression is solitude. I have suffered with severe depression attacks over the recent weeks; it is seemingly a vicious circle that few understand. Only those with the condition can articulate, and only someone in full time ministry can comprehend the weight and spiritual warfare that full time ministry brings. The only reason I have not bailed to a simpler life is the calling God has placed on my life. I must answer to Him alone for all eternity; that is how I relate to the apostle Paul. Acts 9:16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

Has God laid a ministry on your heart? Has God showed you something that you know you were supposed to be doing, and you acted like you didn’t hear him? Are you running from God? You will have to answer for these decisions for an eternity; why you did or did not do what he called you to do. You will stand before Him and give an account for your life; “What did you do with the knowledge of my Son”, he might say. “Why did you run from what I gave you,” he might ask. Do you see where John is speaking of these things in the passage above? You could not only be ashamed of how sinful your life was, but for denying a call of God for your short time here. This short life is simply a preparation for an eternal one; one where you either reap the rewards or suffer the punishment; you must realize the simplicity of that statement.

We are going to be starting a series through the epistle of 1st John at Lakehaven Church. The title of the series is, “Give till it hurts.” We will be studying the epistle and looking how we are called to love, live, and give of ourselves as Christians. We are going to be doing self-evaluations; how do our lives measure up as this epistle sets the bar. Are we abiding in Christ? 1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. Are you living to the best of your ability as a Christian? Are you being obedient to God’s will for your life each day? Isn’t that what Jesus did was abide for only each day? Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Try to take today, just today alone, and give of yourself to Him completely. Tell him in prayer that you are his for the day. Seek to abide and be obedient to what He lays on your heart for today. If he comes back tomorrow, you will not be ashamed.

Anti cruise-control

Anti cruise-control

Romans 5:3-4 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

I use the cruise-control on my truck whenever I can. I honestly have a “need for speed” and have the record at the DMV to prove my lack of ability to obey the suggested speed limits; I meant to say laws :-). Cruise control keeps me rolling along at a ho-hum pace without the focus, thrill, and many times “situations” that require undivided attention. Now I am not opening up for you to blast my lack of regard in so many ways, I am just being honest and using this analogy to ask you if you are on cruise-control as a Christian? Have you settled into the ho-hum lifestyle of religiosity that allows you to feel good about yourself as a Christian, just because you go to church and say a prayer or read your Bible sometimes? Think of how Jesus condemned the religious all through the gospels. Religion is a prideful self-made beast that will condemn if you believe in it is found the key to heaven through what you accomplish by it’s laws.

I would challenge you to find someone who has come through a low point in their lives, and them to not point you to their closeness to God during that time. Many times after He has delivered us to the other side of that trial of life, we crave the intimacy that we found with him during the tribulation he either allowed or designed. We crave not that pain, but we crave how that pain showed us a side of God that maybe we had not seen. We crave hearing from God in prayer, his Word, and encouragement from his saints and through God-orchestrated circumstances. We crave how close we saw and felt Him during that trial of life. That is this hope that is built into and strengthened that Paul writes of: Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Perseverance is a mountain that draws closer to God once step at a time. Perseverance is a character trait that God instills in the heart during sanctification that may come in big things or many times the repetitiveness of the minute. Perseverance is something that He instills in the heart that seeks to abide in him for the day. Perseverance is something that He instills in the heart that seeks to obey and remain in the center of his will for our life. We come to know that He is allowing whatever we may be facing, no matter how big or small; we must look at how we can draw closer to him through each day of our life. A life on cruise-control is never a life that experiences all that God has in store for them. Turn it off and focus on the road ahead with Him.
