Peace within you

Peace within you

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

In the time the Lord gave me pastoring for about a year, I closed most services with the reading of this passage before prayer. No matter where God had us that day, the peace of God could fill us that day. We could be stung by the conviction of sin, or challenged by our lives, or even as a affirmation of what Jesus has done for us, but the peace of God is always available to us. This passage speaks of the gift of God, the Holy Spirit given to us, God living inside of us, changing the way we do life once we grasp that understanding. Sadly, so many of us do not grasp the gift of God that comes with the Gospel, that comes to the humble, repentant heart before God. Jesus said it was better for him to ascend into heaven; better for those that even walked by his side that he was to leave them, so that he could live within them. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

I was actually reading this passage in Romans 5, that study lead here this morning. 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (ESV) Suffering abounds today, just as it always has since the beginning of time. God uses the trials of life to point us to our need for him. You are enduring nothing that someone has not endured before, and you either rebel against God, or draw closer to him as you see your need for him. Many times we realize coming out of the tribulation that we were closer to God than we had ever been as a result of being knocked to our knees. When you are at the bottom, you only can look up.

I openly struggle with anxiety; it is a spiritual battle and one that continually points me to my need for time with God. I find strength in his Word; I find strength in preparing myself for a war I cannot see, but very much feel and endure. Even on it’s worst days, the days I want to retreat into solitude, my bedrock faith and peace are never shaken. A life of struggles, whatever God allows in your life, only points you to your need for daily time with Him. You are not strong enough to do life without Him. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. The more time you spend with God, the more you feed His Spirit living inside of you. The closer you get to God, the more his peace fills your soul. This requires more than religions church attendance and dry prayers, but a heart for God such as King David. I promise you, that if you will truly seek God, you will find the peace of God……living inside of you.

Do and Done

Do and Done

Romans 4:2-5 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

I have heard many times how you can divide the worlds religions into two categories: Do & Done. Ninety nine percent lead you down the path of what you must Do to obtain your key to heaven; there are countless examples of the works based faith systems. The one percent remaining is Christianity where we believe that Jesus Christ accomplished all the work needed for our salvation, all the requirements were met, it is Done. Jesus even uttered those last words on the cross; So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:30). Jesus had come and fulfilled all the requirements of the law; he rose from the dead three days later conquering the power of death, and provided all that we need for the same through faith in him alone. The faith to believe, the simple understanding that God has done for you what you cannot do, that belief in that free gift grants you the key to paradise with him, and a peace on earth for your short time here.

The Message Bible puts it this way:2 If Abraham, by what he did for God, got God to approve him, he could certainly have taken credit for it. But the story we’re given is a God-story, not an Abraham-story. 3 What we read in Scripture is, “Abraham entered into what God was doing for him, and that was the turning point. He trusted God to set him right instead of trying to be right on his own.” 4 If you’re a hard worker and do a good job, you deserve your pay; we don’t call your wages a gift. 5 But if you see that the job is too big for you, that it’s something only God can do, and you trust him to do it – you could never do it for yourself no matter how hard and long you worked – well, that trusting-him-to-do-it is what gets you set right with God, by God. Sheer gift. Grasping the simplicity of Christianity is a sticking point for some. They can’t understand why they don’t have to do something to earn their way into heaven. One of the biggest sects of religion teaches all the works you must do, all the prayers, all the penance, all the worship of many saints, with just enough truth sprinkled in to deceive. Many will fall through it’s deception, many will fall into hell, or purgatory, or wherever, because they believe the things they must do.

All you have to do, is to swallow your pride first, repent of your sins, and have the faith to believe that Jesus accomplished everything for you. That Jesus, the living God, condescended himself to live a perfect life here, die a painful death, and rise again three days later to grant you eternal life. That simple act of faith in believing Him, will change your life forever. Digging into his Word will mold you into what he has designed you for, and you will live your life doing “works” out of a heart of love, and not a false duty.

Unknown God

Unknown God

Acts 17:22-25 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

I have been reading through Paul’s journey in the book of Acts this morning; always amazed at how the Holy Spirit set forth his journey of many places. Paul had been set forth to spread the Gospel, to reach the unreached (the Gentiles), and to go proclaim the good news to all that had never heard it before. Paul was going to suffer for the sake of the Gospel, and he did repeatedly. Mostly when Paul fled from one city to another, it was a result of persecution or knowledge of it coming. Paul also knew when to stay put, even when the doors of the jail were opened by a great earthquake. All of this served to spread the good news of Jesus, and Paul even returned to many places where he was persecuted to strengthen those who needed encouraging.

When Paul was in Athens he was overcome by the idol worship there. He still preached the gospel to all that would here, and his message found him before the leaders wanting to know more of what “new thing” he was teaching. Paul above, the expert orator, used their own idol against them. Their unknown God was being proclaimed to them boldly! I am headed to a country that worships almost countless God’s and I am not knowing how to proclaim the only one true God. I rest in the same wisdom as Paul thousands of years ago, that Jesus has gone before me preparing hearts, designing situations, using his sovereignty and his Spirit to guide my paths and speech.

Do you see how many idols are among us today? What is the first commandment? Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before Me. Not only other countries have many Gods. An idol, or god, is anything you hold in such high value that you worship it. Think about money, or possessions, sex, appearances, conceit or any list things you worry too much over. Today, sadly even in our churches is the coming age of universalism, or pluralism; the idea that all paths lead to God and heaven. This is the broad road that leads to hell. Matthew 7:3 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. The unknown god that the Romans worshipped, is the same God that you may find yourself worshipping today. Don’t fall into the trap of the broad road, but get focused like Paul on the gospel yourself, and sharing it to all that He designs for your life’s journey.

Simple, peaceful life

Simple, peaceful life

Proverbs 15:15-16 All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast. 16 Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it.
I lived so much of my life with the motto “the one who dies with the most toys wins.” I don’t know if I was winning, but I was surely trying with my ever growing list of stuff. That is how we are measured in society, by our material wealth and possessions. We strive to be outwardly rich, pursuing happiness in material gain. We are trying to fill a void in our hearts, fill a pain within us, with purchases that bring temporal satisfaction. The term “buy me some happy” is how we all have felt and dealt with a problem in our lives. We went out and bought anything that brought pleasure until the new wore off it, and then we focused on our next prize. It is a never ending cycle of emotion that brings the pain of debt, dwindling cash, and every problem that comes with ownership. There is nothing material in this world that we will take into eternity, the list is wiped clean. Solomon wrote of the vanity of overworking ourselves, and how it was left to someone else in the book of Ecclesiastes.

God has stripped me of so many of my material possessions in recent years, although I am still far rich by worldly standards. There is nothing material you will ever gain, that does not come with trouble. The trouble can be the financial investment, the time lost with family, the responsibility and problems that come with ownership, the worry of it, the time that could have been better spent on relationships that last, instead of possessions that don’t. That is the only thing that carries into eternity; relationships with your Savior, and the people you invest in. Sharing the Gospel with those who God places around you is how you invest eternally. If the Lord has blessed you financially, return that blessing to him financially by supporting churches and ministries. I read of Jacob’s vow, of his simple plea this morning after experiencing a heavenly vision. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.” (Genesis 28) Do you see the simplicity of his request to God?

There is a peace that surpasses all worldly understanding to those who focus on eternity and not worldly wealth. Matthew Henry put it, “It is therefore far better, and more desirable, to have but a little of the world and to have it with a good conscience, to keep up communion with God, and enjoy him in it, and live by faith, than to have the greatest plenty and live without God in the world.” Seek God and pray for him to give you just enough, and to encourage those around you with the simple peace and pleasure that come with it. There is much peace in the simple life.

Only Believe

Only Believe

Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”

Jarius, a person of Jewish stature, a ruler of the church, had humbled himself at Jesus’ feet and pled for Christ to come heal his deathly ill daughter. He was going against the religious of the day, and believing Jesus could perform that miracle. He had the faith to ask for help, and not the pride to resist. Jarius witnessed a healing of a woman on the way to his home with Jesus; she had simply touched His garment and the power had went out of him because of her faith also. Jarius’ faith was surely strengthened again by witnessing it. Then messengers reached them with the news of his daughters death; Jarius likely lost it and went into shock of emotions. Fear set in with the reality of loosing his daughter, yet he walked by the side with the One who held life in his hands. Jesus assured him to just calm down and have the faith to believe it all was under God’s control. Jarius was about to be a part of a miracle to the point it made historical history in the Bible to encourage us today. Just to have faith that God is always in control.

We can’t grasp it; the fears and the questions always come in life. We always wonder why some things happen to us, why other things don’t, why evil abounds, why bad people prosper, why God allows the things God allows. Our sin nature, the sin in us, the power Satan has in us that breeds those fears. Our sin weakens our faith, but God is always in control. I was reading of Solomon this morning, and how Israel became divided after his death and was about to war upon each other. God sent a prophet to Rehoboam and said, “’Thus says the Lord: “You shall not go up or fight against your brethren! Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from Me.” (2 Chronicles 11:4) God is always in control. There is a purpose behind every thing that happens in our lives. Free Will is intertwined with God’s control through a complexity we cannot begin to grasp.

What weakens your fears and strengthens your faith? Simply put is the daily pursuit of God through prayer and time in his Word. The heart that seeks him is the heart that finds him on a level that will change your outlook on life. Once you begin to experience the revelations of how real God is, how personal God is, how he controls even the smallest details of your life, your faith will be strengthened. You will begin to understand that fear is from Satan, sent only as a Spiritual attack. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) God will use your faith to encourage and draw others unto himself by your testimony to him. You will walk with a new outlook on life, seeing this life as it is, temporary, and see the blessing of eternal paradise with Him. That alone strengthens your faith to face whatever comes for the day. You begin to face life only one day at a time. Fear is worrying about a future event, and your future is secure in heaven.

More Valuable than Gold

More Valuable than Gold

Psalm 119:65-72 You have dealt well with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word. 66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, For I believe Your commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word. 68 You are good, and do good; Teach me Your statutes. 69 The proud have forged a lie against me, But I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart. 70 Their heart is as fat as grease, But I delight in Your law. 71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes. 72 The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.

I love how God works. I heard a partial sermon yesterday on Psalm 119 and how the writer compared the Word of God to be better than gold to him (Psalm 119:127). Pastor Begg was preaching on another topic, but I could not escape how just that scripture had spoken to me. I rose up even earlier this morning to study. I stopped reading at the passage above, feeling that same stirring of the Holy Spirit. As the study deepened, I was moved by a commentary of my favorite pastor, CH Spurgeon. “However God has dealt with us, he has dealt with us better than we deserve; and all in love, and for our good. Many have knowledge, but little judgment; those who have both, are fortified against the snares of Satan, and furnished for the service of God. We are most apt to wander from God, when we are easy in the world. We should leave our concerns to the disposal of God, seeing we know not what is good for us. Lord, thou art our bountiful Benefactor; incline our hearts to faith and obedience. The psalmist will go on in his duty with constancy and resolution. The proud are full of the world, and its wealth and pleasures; these make them senseless, secure, and stupid. God visits his people with affliction, that they may learn his statutes. Not only God’s promises, but even his law, his percepts, though hard to ungodly men, are desirable, and profitable, because they lead us with safety and delight unto eternal life.”

I have an immense load of “life” upon me now as I am sure you do also. Even when we crack under the pressures of it, the sovereign hand of God is in control of it. All things pass through God’s control, and our limited minds cannot comprehend that. But the question that the unknown writer, (most scholars think David), asks here is, where is your faith in your Bible and your God? Where is your faith, where is your heart in the pursuit of God found in your Bible? Are you pursuing the truths found there, or are you led by this temporal world you are just passing through? Your heart for God is measured my it’s pursuit of him through the Spiritual Disciplines of prayer, meditation on scriptures, fasting, and living your life in accordance to them. A heart for God does not measure itself by it’s Sunday church attendance record and list of good works.

Listen how Spurgeon described just Psalm 119, which in itself describes the whole Bible which had not been written yet. “It spread itself out before me like a vast, rolling prairie, to which I could see no bound, and this alone created a feeling of dismay. Its expanse was unbroken by a bluff or headland, and hence it threatened a monotonous task, although the fear has not been realized. This marvellous poem seemed to me a great sea of holy teaching, moving, in its many verses, wave upon wave; altogether without an island of special and remarkable statement to break it up.”

Is your Bible more valuable that gold to you?

Where time matters most

Where time matters most

Acts 18:20-21 When they asked him to stay a longer time with them, he did not consent, 21 but took leave of them, saying, “I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing.” And he sailed from Ephesus.

In the context of this passage, it is written of the Apostle Paul visiting about six places. All of his stops were to strengthen the churches. Paul would visit an area, men would come to faith, and Paul would prepare them to lead their new church God had entrusted them with. Paul would usually return at a later time to help with the problems that have arisen, and encourage them to be strong in the tasks of building the kingdom. Do you realize that most of Paul’s New Testament writings are to these churches that he started? Paul life was focused, focused on one thing that truly mattered; a heavenly focus to share the heavenly hope of God’s grace and mercy available to everyone who will repent and believe in Jesus Christ.

I am a workaholic by nature, I relax by doing work projects. My job is incredibly demanding, and living a life on call is difficult at the highest level. Only a few people truly understand what it is like to live your life on call, never able to truly take off from work. Some of us are so bound by work we miss the joy of life because we are focused on the next sale, the next promotion, or just the money for the next pleasure. My youngest son prayed for me to not have to work so much this weekend……it hurt to the core. Are you missing out on what truly matters in life, investments in the only things that matter? Eternal investments are in people. In their lives, in their eternal lives, in their knowledge of Jesus Christ and understanding that this life is temporal.

The Apostle Paul got it. He lived his life focused on the next life. Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Paul lived his life abiding in Christ; he was in a state of being in Christ. He focused on what truly mattered, sharing the gospel to a dying world. When you begin to spend daily time with God, seeking him in prayer and his Word, every, single, day, you become more like Jesus. Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. You are transformed by the power of God through his Spirit that opens the truths of God to you. You begin to see what truly matters, like Paul, you begin to seek making eternal investments. Is whatever you are focused on today, going to make a difference in someone for eternity? Is the next purchase going to get someone close to you the keys to heaven? Why not spend time asking God to open your heart and eyes to someone close to you that needs the Good News today? Spend some time…….where it matters most.

Humble Request

Humble Request

Matthew 23:12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Have you ever heard pride is the root of all evil? It really is, because it can be traced back to when Satan was cast out of heaven for a prideful heart. Pride was instilled in the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve wanted to be smart as God. Pride is evil at it’s core; it puffs us up and making us think more of ourselves than anyone else really does. One of our presidential candidates is one of the most prideful men I have ever witnessed, and is headed to one of the greatest falls, either as part of this life or at the Judgement Seat when Jesus tells him how little he really is. Pride is the root of my testimony; I could do and have anything I wished for most of my life. I sought to attain all I could get my hands on and counted everything as victories. God has humbled me greatly financially, physically, and mentally, showing me the level of my sins. I honestly don’t like any sort of attention as a result of his work in me, where that was all I sought for all I did for most of my life; pride can creep back in and it truly sickens me now.

Jesus was coming down with both fists like a prized MMA fighter on the prideful religious leaders of the day in Matthew 23. He was pointing out the level of their sin, their pride, their hypocrisy, and condemning them to hell if they did not change. They were teachers of all the laws of religion, yet they lived their lives in hypocrisy. Jesus pointed out all they wanted was the attention it brought them. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. We must understand that heaven is going to flip this world upside down. We must understand that when sin is removed for an eternal paradise for those who have repented and believed, all that we know now will change. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. The poor will be eternally rich in a way we can’t comprehend. The lowly will become heavenly in a way that they can’t imagine. Heaven is going to be without sin, and the bind that sin has on us is rooted in pride.

Listen at Jesus’ heart for Jerusalem. 37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! Is your heart cold towards God because you are so enticed by all the world has to offer that you don’t listen? Has he ever convicted you of pride and your hard heart denied it? Are you chasing riches and accolades except for Sunday mornings religious obligations? My prayer is that you humbly pray for God to open your heart to prides sin. Let him humble you and show you the level of it. It will most likely be an easier road than when he says enough, and begins the humbling process without your plea. Read Matthew 23 and ask yourself if you would want to ever hear that chastising from your Lord.

Can you stand?

Can you stand?

Proverbs 14:26-27 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge 27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.
Are you willing to point out sin? Are you willing to step on the toes of those you love, of friends, of family, of maybe even your church? Are you willing to stand up for truth, even though it comes with a cost? Are you willing to be moved into daily repentance yourself, if you say that you are willing to teach the precepts of the Lord? This is missing as a society today. We have become a nation that is scared to offend; a nation that has no spine, but continually molds itself to whatever doesn’t offend, speaking soft words of encouragement only. We have no spine to stand for Truth. This has crept into our church pulpits and many pastors only speak of heaven, blessings, and never preach of hell and repentance. There is more of the world in the church now than the church in the world. The passion is missing from pulpits, for preachers have softened their gospels to fit societies spineless minds. We teach of the blessings that come, but steer away from the cost of denial. There is equal power of God in the promise of salvation and the conviction of sin.

Holy, reverent fear is healthy. It keeps your path straight, keeps you from sin, and keeps your heart digging into God’s Word. If you are not fearful of God, you don’t truly know him. Psalms 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

I am stopping here…..much too close to my heart for what I see today.

Overcome the World

Overcome the World

John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

I will tell you how my brain works; how I begin to study the Bible most days. I am a word search guy mostly. It may be something I am directly dealing with, many times it is something that comes to mind while in prayer. I always pray before studying God’s Word. This morning as I sat on the porch, the weight of life was sinking in on me; I was feeling overwhelmed, or overcome by it. I am under a great load at work, and a great load around the home, and feeling the pressures of everything to do with India. We all have those days we feel overcome by the pressures of life. This morning I came in and began to search overcome, seeing where God led me. I realized in Satan’s attacks, were hidden blessings. I realized Satan’s monetary attacks were truly financial eternal investments. I realized I was a chosen child of God……

John 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. What is the inspiration in the middle of that tribulation? “I chose you” is what Jesus said to his disciples. I am not opening the door of theological arguments of election, but God choses you just as he chose the twelve apostles. There is a joy of the heart that overcomes tribulation when you realize you are a chosen child of God.

1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. When you are that chosen child of God, humbling yourself in a repentant plea before him, his salvation comes with his Spirit living inside of you. You are blessed to have God living in your heart. The Great Comforter, the encourager, the teacher of all things holy is living in your heart. The Holy Spirit is imparting the truths of God to you from his Word when you study it. He is whispering to you warnings against sins before you commit it. He is giving you strength to face the day, in whatever lies before you. You are never alone, but have God by your side continually. He says, “I will never leave you.”

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Are you living your daily life as an example of your faith? Do those around you know that you are a Christian by your actions and speech? Daily time in prayer and God’s Word will transform you into his disciple. You cannot spend daily time there and remain the same. You will become more like him, and less like the world. When the world seeks to convince you otherwise, search him out in prayer and meditation on his truths. He will convince you that you have overcome the world.
