Buy me some happy?

Buy me some happy?

James 4:1-3  Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Yesterday was a rough day; a Monday is the easiest explanation. Things just seemed to not go as planned all day long; plans got changed all day long; things planned did not get accomplished; the list goes on. This creates an inner battle with me, a battle of anxieties many times. A battle that grows underneath the surface of the tasks of the day. I even found myself wanting to buy something to feel good, or to reward myself for all my hard work as I thought. I wanted to buy myself some “happy”. We all have most likely been down that road. Yesterday it created a war in my mind that continued until I went to bed. The only way to escape this battle seemed to be sleep.

Much of James 4 is speaking to the dissension in the early church. Dissension divides, and Satan smiles at the division. I personally know of this; my family was divided over church at a very young age, and I still carry that weight. I find myself today in many of the same struggles, of our place of worship is divided among its members. Matthew Henry states; “What is sheltered and shrouded under a specious pretence of zeal for God and religion often comes from men’s pride, malice, covetousness, ambition, and revenge.” OUCH. The world is coming into the church more than the church is going out into the world. I could take that money I did not have to spend anyway, and spend it on someone who truly does not have; to show them the love of Christ in a world far from Christ.

I am so tired. So tired of all the selfishness of society; so tired of all the materialism of the place where God has me currently. I found myself yesterday drifting back into the desires of the flesh. I see all that is around me and still somewhere inside me I still want. This war is a war of ourselves, a war of body and soul. Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. These wars of self creep into our lives in so many ways; leading so many decisions and discussions. As I gave my testimony this weekend, the root of it is pride. God is still working on me and showing me how much of it still exists. I pray that no matter how painful   it becomes, He still continues to break down me in that realm.

Don’t put it off – It starts today

Don’t put it off – It starts today

2 Corinthians 5:14-15   For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

The Apostle Paul had been pouring out the proofs of a Christ centered life in the scriptures leading to this. He had spoken of the desire to be with Christ in our renewed bodies; he had spoken of the faith that leads us; he had spoken of the reality of the judgement seat of Christ that we must all stand before one day. We must answer for every action, word, and thought for our time allowed here before Christ that day. As I gave my testimony yesterday to our small group, those reflections scare me. I lived so much of my life as a very bad guy; but God still pursued me, forgave me, and can use me to attest to the power of His saving grace. I am a testament to the forgiving power of the Lord Jesus Christ. You can be too!

Paul got it. He got the realization of how bad he was, and how great Christ is. He got the realization of his pathway to hell if he did not accept what Christ had done for him, and what he could not do for himself. Once your depravity lost in sin truly sinks in, you will be drawn to move your life forward in a way of service to the One who provided you eternal forgiveness and life through faith in Him. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. This new person should live as a new person, not returning to the ways of one’s old self. The desire to live a new life should be stronger than the desire to return to sin. This is where only true change comes; through the power of the Gospel first. You cannot change yourself and then come to God. You must humble yourself and let God change you first. You cannot do this on your own prideful will.

I feel trapped in my current situation of life right now. I could expound on that, but I am sure many of us feel the same way. God knows where you are right now and what you are feeling. In any of life’s circumstances you can dedicate your life to God. Paul did it in prison. If he had been busy preaching every day walking the streets of the middle east, we would not have much of the New Testament. God parked him in a prison and said “write what I tell you to”. Living a life “no longer for themselves” just means seeking and focusing your every day on drawing nearer to God. Through this pursuit He will direct your paths and steer you towards someone whom you may encourage. Those divine appointments reveal a life dedicated to the One whom died for yours. 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. It starts today.

All of creation longs

All of creation longs

Romans 8:22-25  For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

There are underlying tones of sin and hope in humanity. Our entire structure is captured in the travail of sin; the inescapable pain of a soul lost; a soul that was created for intimacy and yet  a chasm came between the Creator and the creation. The divide that sin brought came with pain that all of creation feels. In the scriptures prior, (19-22), the commentaries seem to feel all of God’s creation suffers due to the fall of man into sin. All of creation groans and awaits the return of Christ; the renewal of God’s perfection in the new earth and new heaven. This hope lies in all; this hope of all God’s creatures to return to His original design.

Do you have that hope of Christ’s return? Is there something deep inside your soul that desires for that intimacy and perfection as a child of His in the renewed creation upon His return? Does this world sicken you at their apostasy in the pursuit of selfish, idolistic, material gains? The world around us is consumed by selfish; by placing everything before God. There are separations  growing in society; the rich getting richer, the dissolution of the middle class, and the growth of those classified as poor. Those poor today will become rich in eternity if they place their souls today in Christ. Matthew 19:30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

This hope of things to come; when genuine, will make the travails of today seem small. This hope when nourished daily will see the bigger picture, the reason to perceiver for this short time. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. The strength gained in this nourishment of daily time with God builds that hope that lies within you. It makes the sacrifices seem bearable; it makes the promises of God real. Christ promised the disciples of this in Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. All that you face today, may be all that you face. Tomorrow is a day closer to His return; and the promises that come to those who place their hope in Him. Revelation 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Heeerrrrre’s your sign……….(in my best Bill Engvall voice)

Heeerrrrre’s your sign……….(in my best Bill Engvall voice)

Matthew 24:6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

I am not the “news nerd” I once was. I now usually watch the first 15 minutes of the local news to catch the weather, for it plays a major roll in my business load and schedule. Many times I have to change it and come back to the weather to shield the mayhem from my boys. The world scene I catch mostly by chance online and radio. But the world scene this week has demanded greater attention with the imminent outlook of escalating war in Israel. The stage is being set for an elevated warfront during a time of uncertainty of allies and leadership of that region and abroad. Israel is known throughout the world as God’s people, and God promised Abraham that He would protect them eternally. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” The Bible is full of proof of this promise of God to the Jewish nation.

We all know of how fragile our nations economy is right now. Most likely many of us have felt it’s pain on a very personal scale. The world’s economy is teetering also on the brink of collapse. We have seen weather phenomena recently that have seemed extraordinary;  great storms, fires, and earthquakes of recent years. All of these are signs of God’s power, not mother nature. He is in control and He is giving us signs to point us to Himself. Are we living in the times of Matthew 24? Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. Can you see how much of this could fall onto the timetable of today’s generation?

How can we turn our back blindly on what we see unfolding before us? How can we not be pressed to share the hope that lies within us? Those around us just may seem to not notice, or worse yet to deny God’s work around them. Christ tells us in Matthew His return will catch many by surprise; and they will pay for their mistake eternally. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. The signs are here, the time is now. Can you really afford to go about your day and pretend it is not really happening? It is not too late, until it is.

R & R, how?

R & R, how?

Matthew 11:28-30   Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Most of us related R&R to rest & relaxation; a common term sought but rarely found in today’s society.  There is an underlying tone growing in our society; a tone of security lost. The lives we once were accustomed to vanish in an instant. Careers that we pour our lives into gone in a flash; and our lives and securities as we knew them vanish before us. The words secure and career have become an oxymoron; impossible to be used in the same sentence. These pains I know firsthand. There are many in my circle of friends experiencing it currently. We are at a point in our lives where we only know to look for God in the days to come; and to only rely on the understanding He will never forsake us. The writer of Hebrews reminds us to keep our eyes only on God; to rest in that security. Hebrews 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” My study Bible says of this scripture, “This is one of the most emphatic statements in the New Testament. In Greek it contains two double negatives, as if to say, ‘I will never, ever, ever forsake you.” In the times when you struggle and wonder the why’s of life; instill this scripture in your heart to find peace in it.

Christ in the scriptures above had been speaking of John the Baptist and rebuking all the cities where He had performed many miracles, yet they refused to believe. He told them of how they would suffer greatly for turning their backs on Him. Then He went to prayer and thanked His Father for hardening the hearts of the prideful, and blessing the hearts of the humble. The humble found the peace and strength in Christ. They understood their need for Him. Christ sought to take that worry from them, and provide rest for them in their time of need. All that life throws at you; yanks out from under you; all of it can be of no merit when you rest in the security of Christ.

The wisest man who ever lived penned these words of peace in Ecclesiastes 3:1 To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: 2 A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; 3 A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; 7 A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; 8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace. The R&R of life is only, truly, found in Christ.

You don’t have to go to seminary to be a disciple

You don’t have to go to seminary to be a disciple

Matthew 28:19-20   Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

To understand the good news, you must first understand the bad. You are going to be punished in hell if you believe that you can obtain your Salvation by any other means than the understanding that is only comes through Christ alone. John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. The idea that any good works earn you any merit towards your salvation is a false teaching. You earn nothing by going to church every week; by repetitious prayers required from priests; by the good deeds to outweigh the bad; by anything that has an act of the requirement of religion behind it. There will be many in hell that were in church every Sunday feeling good about themselves for doing so. Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Religion is the false security found in oneself on the acts falsely required of it.

Hope is not lost now that you question all your religiosity. Hope is gained in the simplicity of the Gospel. Gospel is actually defined as good news. The good news is that, For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:17) The way to the obtain God’s saving grace through His son is the understanding that you can never do ANYTHING to earn it. Pride is at the root of all sin, and pride is at the root of all the religiosity of merits to earn God’s favor. You can only enter the narrow gate of forgiveness by removing the swollen heart of pride, and accepting Christ’s free gift. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. A humble repentant heart in that understanding; a plea for forgiveness of one’s sins; and a desire to live one’s life for Christ will gain eternal paradise. Christ holds the key, and only through Him may the gate be opened for you. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

What do we now do with all that we freely gained? Matthew 28:19-20   Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. This is known as the Great Commission; Christ’s last words before He ascended into heaven. You are called to action; you are to be a disciple sharing the Good News to all that He places before you. He may use your testimony, but He always uses the power found in the words of the Gospel. You cannot continue to live in sin, nor in your religiosity, once you have come to the understanding of the Gospel, and it’s power to save. Being a disciple does not require a seminary degree. It only requires a heart that produces good works as a result of the realization of the simplicity of the Gospel. The good works we once believed earned our merit before God, now are the product of a heart transformed with Christ. A disciple longs to share all that they have gained in Him. A disciple feels the urgency of the need for the Good News to those around them. A disciple plea is for God to use them.

The time is now; a call to action

The time is now; a call to action

Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

The prophet Joel is also quoted here in Acts 2:17 by Peter at the day of Pentecost when the Spirit came upon all who were gathered (it is not known how many). The Holy Spirit is given in different measures at different times in the Bible. Matthew Henry explains: “We often read in the Old Testament of the Spirit of the Lord coming by drops, as it were, upon the judges and prophets whom God raised up for extraordinary services; but now the Spirit shall be poured out plentifully in a full stream, as was promised with an eye to gospel-times,(Isa. 44:3). I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed. 2. The time fixed for this is afterwards; after the fulfilling of the foregoing promises this shall be fulfilled. St. Peter expounds this of the last days, the days of the Messiah, by whom the world was to have its last revelation of the divine will and grace in the last days of the Jewish church, a little before its dissolution. 3. The extent of this blessing, in respect of the persons on whom it shall be bestowed. The Spirit shall be poured out upon all flesh, not as hitherto upon Jews only, but upon Gentiles also; for in Christ there is no distinction between Jew and Greek.”

Yesterday I listened to a sermon by David Platt on how so many Christians who are in our nations churches today are not truly saved. God has placed that same burden on my soul. God is pressing an urgency into this burden; an anguish for those who think they are saved, but they are not. Christ did not call us to say a prayer or sign a card, but to become disciples. Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. The start of your life as a disciple begins with a humble heart, repentance, and a plea for forgiveness. It does not stop there. You are called to change and called to action. You are called to leave your sinful ways and to spread the Good News of Christ’s work in your testimony and the promise of eternal hope He gives freely to others. You are to be a vessel of encouragement for those who feel Christ knocking at their souls door; to answer His call for the same call to action.

Are their evidences in your life of Christ? Do you question your Salvation? Do you question your Salvation because their is little evidence of Christ, but much proof of a life still bound by sin? Paul had come to the Corinthians a third time warning them against continued living in sin and those leading them astray. He told them to do a self check: 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you fail to meet the test! There is security in your Salvation, you cannot loose it, nor it be taken from you. The doubt of it is from Satan to steal your joy. If you do a self check and have doubt; repent and ask God to make the changes in your life to become a disciple of His and with that comes the security of it.

Man, have I got a story to tell you

Man, have I got a story to tell you

Acts 26:19-20   “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.

The Jews sought to kill the Apostle Paul. He had been rescued of sorts and had been taken to a Roman prison to stand before Governor Felix.  It was at times almost as a house arrest with privileges, because Felix could find no charges against him to merit punishment. For two years Felix’s curiosity with Paul and his message kept Paul close to Felix. Felix was succeeded by Festus, and Paul’s case was brought before him by the Jews again. Festus confronted Paul, and Paul witnessed to him of his faith and the case against him; then he asked to go before Caesar. In the interim, King Agrippa came to see Festus, and they brought Paul before them to hear his story again. Time after time Paul shared his faith and testimony of how Christ changed his life; and of how he could change theirs too. These were the men who held the power of life and death in their judicial system in their hands; and Paul boldly shared his faith.

Are you a walking, talking testimony of the power of Christ in your life? Are you an example of a life with new meaning once you discovered the hope of eternity; the forgiveness of sin; the power of God to transform your heart? Do those around you wonder what changed? Do they ask; do you tell? Your life’s story has a beginning and an end. Somewhere along that line is the point in your life that you experience Salvation through a humble repentant heart. That mark in your life becomes your testimony of the conversion of your life through Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you. Every part of your life before and after that mark comes under new light. The before Christ mark allows you to witness to those in the same struggles and place hope in them for a change. The struggles you face as a disciple of Christ show you how to suffer for Christ; to take these challenges and focus in on Christ for strength. All that we face as Christians is to be used to draw glory to God.

There are three things you cannot be taken away: Salvation, your testimony, and God’s Word that you plant in your heart. Your story matters to God, and your story can be used by God to draw others to Him. Are you keeping it to yourself? Are you being bold as Paul and witnessing to those you see every day in your circle of influence? Do they even know you are a Christian by your actions? We live in a nation in dire need of hope, and you can share your hope of an eternally changed life by sharing your testimony. Most likely; the person who needs to hear it most is the person standing before you that God placed there. 1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Satan’s hole in his camo

Satan’s hole in his camo

2 Timothy 2:3-4   You therefore must endure[ hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

This is a day we remember those who were and are serving our country in our military. They are those who dedicated their lives to obtaining the goal set before them at all costs. No veteran should be so weak as to not lay down their life for their cause. It is instilled in them in training for their focused purposes that may lay ahead. They are to be honored for their service in the face of all types of dangers to protect what so many take for granted in the freedom we so cherish. They serve with a honor and dignity under their commander for the nation they are sworn to protect. It mostly comes with a cost; pain and sometimes death; but that is what they understood upon offering themselves up as a soldier for our country.

The Apostle Paul is writing to Timothy to encourage him in what he knows he will face in the difficulties of being a disciple of Christ’s; even as a soldier for Christ. He is encouraging him to remain focused as soldier to please his commander; to accomplish the goal through any hardships he may endure; to press on. When you begin to step forward in your walk with Christ; that is when it may get difficult. Distractions come in all sorts; but they will come to take your eyes off the mission at hand; to spread Christ’s gospel to those in your circle of influence. The affairs of this life may seem to be blessings, anxieties, timetables, sickness, pain, the list goes on. All of them to take your eyes off Christ; all of them from the enemy as John 10:10 says; 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.

I live a life of being pulled in all directions. A husband, father, business owner, sole provider, student. I struggle just like all of you in time management with all these titles and more. I am indebted to lenders, indebted to my family, but ultimately indebted to Christ. Being a soldier for Christ does not mean you remove yourself from the world; it means you show Christ to your world. It means that in everything you do, in all that you face, you take that opportunity to share your faith. God gives you opportunities to witness where Satan seeks to bring distractions and strife. When you begin to see and understand all that you face has passed through God’s hands; it becomes easier to remain focused on sharing your faith with those around you. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. A good soldier for Christ can see Satan’s camouflaged distractions and press on to the goal that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

Square pegs in round holes

Square pegs in round holes

Ephesians 5:15-17    Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (ESV)

Do you ever have that feeling of being an outsider? That feeling of just not belonging where you are? The closer you get to God; the closer you get to understanding how far this world we live in is apart from God. I could go down the path of listing the evidences of this reality, but if you argue with them, or you are blind to them, you are not grounded in the Word, but in the world. The more you surround yourself with the things of God on a daily basis, the more you will realize how your spiritual senses have been numbed before. All of the media that invades our minds daily dulls our senses to God. There are ways to heighten your senses and become more keen to how God sees the world; but it takes effort on your part.

The Apostle Paul was trying to unify the church at Ephesus to live like Christians. He writes in Ephesians 4-6 of how we “were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”(5:8). Paul is writing to those that are being persecuted; himself being in prison at the time of this Epistle. There was evidence in his life of his belief in Christ. There should be a before and after point in the testimony of your life with Christ. You cannot remain idle once you become saved; idleness is backsliding. You are either moving forward in your pursuit of Him, or you are falling away from Him; you cannot sit still. This pursuit is gained in the time God has given us and how we utilize that time. Matthew Henry said, “Our time is a talent given us by God for some good end, and it is misspent and lost when it is not employed according to his design. If we have lost our time heretofore, we must endeavour to redeem it by doubling our diligence in doing our duty for the future.”

The more you begin to seek God every day; the more you will begin to remove yourself from the ways of the world. There will be a hunger that grows, a desire to know more of Him. If you follow that desire in a conscious effort, God will open your mind through your heart. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Your life will never be the same once you begin to pursue God every day. You will find joy in being that outsider; apart from the world; separated to God. Romans 1:1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.

Application: I felt God work in my life in the music I listened to. When I changed my radio to contemporary Christian music and left it there, it made a huge difference in my life. You cannot seek God’s heart one moment and listen to Highway to Hell the next.
