Romans 8
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I can get lost in time in Romans 8. Paul is pouring out his heart and showing us the love of our Father in the giving us of His Son. He spends the early part of the chapter showing us God’s grace in this; and of how Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Law given to Moses. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Paul is giving us an overview of Justification; or paying our penalty for sin in 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (ESV). God has simply done for you what you could never do for yourself in regards to the payment of the sin debt required.
Paul stresses the weight of the realization of this in 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors–not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. There should be a point in your Christian life that the realization of verse 12 begins to sink in. You have been given God’s grace (unmerited favor) through the sacrifice of Christ at the cross. Can you imagine someone you don’t know, or maybe don’t like, laying down their life for you? Christ did that with an infinite multiplier for humanity; knowing of all the sin and hate in the past, present, and future. Our sinful minds are blocked to grasping the understanding of that grace. God will begin to stir your heart and give you a glimpse of that idea, and that glimpse alone should change your life and view of your God forever.
That glimpse into grace should humble your heart and warm your soul. You may come to this by God’s power resting upon you in that realization at Salvation. You may come to understand this when at some point you make the conscious effort to draw near to God. Once He opens your eyes through your heart to the extent of His grace; you should not be able to return to your old self. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (ESV). It should so stir your heart that you want to know more; you want to pursue God more; you want to share what you have with others. Paul continues in Romans 8 showing us that nothing else matters once we grab ahold of the realization of becoming a disciple of Christ. Living our lives for Him is all that matters, and all that we face passes through His hands. Romans 8:28. Paul is so moved by the Spirit that he is hard pressed to express himself in the verses above, of the security as a believer in Christ.
